International Focus

Looking for a global view? You'll find it at Conn.

Fifty-five percent of our students study away for at least one semester. Choose one of Conn's own study away programs, called SATAs, or an approved program run by another institution. If you choose a SATA, you'll spend a semester abroad with a small group of Conn students and faculty. Popular SATA sites include Vietnam, South Africa, the Czech Republic and Italy.

For a more intensive international experience, consider the certificate program of the Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts, known as CISLA. If you are accepted (you apply during the sophomore year), you will combine any major with interdisciplinary courses, language study, study away, an internship abroad and a senior research project.

Or, you may enroll in another interdisciplinary certificate program - in community action, environmental studies or arts and technology - and choose an international topic and internship site. Every Conn student has the opportunity to do a paid summer internship; these days, about 16 percent do their internships outside the U.S.

Many of our faculty are expanding their research boundaries with an international, cross-cultural or transnational focus. They'll bring these perspectives to the classroom and challenge you to expand your world view. The student body brings another global perspective; about 5 percent of students come from outside the U.S, representing about 45 nations. Through our Traveling Research and Immersion Program (TRIP), some courses include a short international travel component, usually without any additional course fee.

Sharpen your international edge even more by studying or majoring in a foreign language. We offer French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese and Russian as well as classics and linguistics. For even the hardest languages, small classes and study away options allow you to gain real proficiency in four years.

Our mission statement sums it up : "We educate students to put the liberal arts in action as citizens in a global society."

The action starts here.
