Stanton Ching
Professor of Chemistry On Sabbatical for Fall 2007
Joined Connecticut College: 1990 Specialization:
Professor Ching teaches a wide range of chemistry courses at all levels, including General Chemistry, Advanced General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Synthesis and Physical Characterization of Inorganic Compounds, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, and Molecular Science (for non-science majors). He also mentors students in research projects through independent study, honors study, and summer research. Ching's research interests are in the areas of inorganic materials chemistry. His current research program is focused on developing new synthetic routes to microporous manganese oxides, which are of great interest due to potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis, toxic waste remediation, and rechargeable battery technology. Connecticut College undergraduates play a vital role in his research and have made many valuable contributions and discoveries. Ching publishes regularly in scientific journals such as Chemistry of Materials, Inorganic Chemistry, and Langmuir. Students frequently earn co-authorship on his articles. Ching's research has received funding from the Research Corporation, the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, and the National Science Foundation. Among Ching's professional activities, he is Secretary to the Editorial Board and a member of the Board of Directors for the INORGANIC SYNTHESES organization. He also serves as a scientific consultant for the Sherman Fairchild Foundation. In 2002, he was site coordinator for the national meeting of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which was held at Connecticut College. Ching also enjoys a variety of recreational activities such as cycling, hiking, volleyball, basketball, and yard work. He has been the faculty athletics representative to the NCAA for Connecticut College since 1994 and was a volunteer assistant coach for women's volleyball from 1992-1998. In 2002-2003, Ching served as Interim Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education. Visit the chemistry site and the Ching Group homepage. |
