Copyright Guidelines for Coursepack Preparation

(per Memorandum from Fran Hoffmann to All Faculty, August 12, 2003 )
  1. Course packs are produced on campus by the Print Shop. Faculty members are responsible for compiling coursepacks and delivering them to the Print Shop.

  2. For purposes of the fall '08 semester, the Print Shop will need materials NO LATER THAN MONDAY, AUGUST 15th for preparation of fall semester course packs.

  3. The Print Shop is responsible for obtaining copyright permissions for all materials being used in a coursepack. Faculty are responsible for compiling coursepacks in a timely fashion for gathering copyright permission. Directions for creating a coursepack and a copyright permissions form are available on the Printing Services web page. The deadline for submission of course packs for the upcoming semester will be set by the Print Shop. In order to make course packs affordable to students, a flat fee has been established for all coursepacks. Prior to each year, the College will assess the actual average cost of each coursepack and adjust the flat fee accordingly. For 2008-2009 the coursepack fee will be $35.00 per coursepack.

  4. The Print Shop will produce coursepacks on demand - that is, one at a time as students order and are charged for them. There is generally a 24 hour turnaround from date of submission.   Students will need to order their coursepacks online via CamelWeb; a college id is required when ordering online. Coursepacks are to be picked up at the Print Shop, and the fee will be billed directly to their student account.   A receipt will be provided when the coursepack is picked up.

Considerations:

The options listed above balance cost considerations and pedagogical flexibility and we ask that faculty consider carefully the advantages and disadvantages of each option as they plan their courses. Coursepacks bring with them the convenience for students of assembling course material in one place, but they entail copyright and production costs that will ultimately be passed on to students. On-line reserves using the Moodle course management system offers the advantages of student access wherever internet connections are available, but they leave to students decisions about what to print (unless faculty make printing and bringing the assigned materials to class a requirement). Similarly, print reserves avoid the costs associated with copyright permissions, but require students to make copies of materials in person in the library.
