Copyright
Policy Statement
It is the intent
of Connecticut College to adhere to the provisions of the
U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code Sect. 101, et seq.),
the congressional fair use guidelines, and licenses and contractual
agreements in the provision of resources and services to the
Connecticut College community. The College recognizes the
role of copyright in promoting scholarly research and publication,
and supports compliance of these laws by faculty, students,
and staff.
Members of the
campus community are advised to become as knowledgeable as
possible regarding copyright and fair
use as it pertains to their discipline. Connecticut College
does not accept legal responsibility for copyright infringement
by individual members of the College community. Individuals
who willfully disregard College policy and guidelines do so
at their own risk and assume all liability.

Copyright
Clearance Service
Placing copies of library materials on reserve or distributing
copies of material in class can add great value to your instructional
efforts. Determining whether copyright permission is necessary
for these activities is an important step in the process of
preparing for your instructional sessions - whether you are
placing materials on reserve at the library's circulation
desk, using Moodle for electronic reserves, developing a Moodle
course site, preparing a coursepack or distributing individual
copies to your class. Each of these actions may require that
you gain copyright permission to use these materials in your
teaching. To make this process easier, faculty have the resources
of the Copyright Clearance Service at the circulation desk
in Shain Library. This service allows faculty to request permission
to reproduce copyrighted content such as library reserves,
e-Reserves, and Moodle sites.
Note that materials owned or licensed by the Connecticut College libraries may not need copyright permission in order to be placed on print or electronic reserves or to be duplicated for classroom distribution. See the Course Reserves Policy and Procedure page for complete information. The Copyright Clearance Center can help faculty determine whether permissions are necessary and then, if so, obtain permissions to reproduce materials not owned or licensed by Connecticut College libraries or for reproductions of materials that fall outside fair use.
The copyright guidelines for each material type may vary
but, the procedure for using the library's Copyright Clearance
Service is simple! First, you will need to determine if you
need copyright permission. See the overview of Fair Use Guidelines for more information. We remind you that
reproduction of materials owned or licensed by the Libraries
may not require permission. We subscribe to a large number
of full text journal articles online which are licensed for
use in your class and do not require copyright permission.
Use the libraries' journal
locator to identify those journal articles that are available
full text online.
Once you have determined the materials that require permission complete the "Reserve Copyright Clearance" form available at the Circulation Desk for each item to be submitted. A printable copy of this form is also available. Your information will then be submitted to the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) electronically requesting the needed permission. A copy of your completed form indicating that permission has been received will be returned to you as soon as the CCC has responded to your request. The CCC processing fee plus the copyright holder's royalty fee will then be charged back to the academic department periodically throughout the year.
Specific guidelines and procedures have been developed to
provide information regarding print reserves and Moodle/eReserves.
Faculty members who prefer to obtain permission without using the Copyright Clearance Service in Shain Library may choose to contact the copyright holders on their own by submitting a letter requesting permission by mail or fax. A brief guide to this process is available online.
For additional assistance regarding copyright contact your library liaison or Beth Hansen, Director of Research Support & Instruction, x2681. Reserve or procedural questions should be addressed to Carol Strang, Reserve Supervisor, x2663
