How to use Altiris HiLighter annotation software

With this software you can:

• draw or write annotations on the computer screen
• cover a screen area
• shine a spotlight around the screen
• zoom in on an area
• point or place arrows and other graphics on the screen
• save your annotations

Available on campus:

• on the instructor's PC workstation in the Brown Auditorium
• on the instructor's workstation in the Davis Electronic Classroom

How to annotate:

• Double-click the HiLighter icon on the desktop
• Slide the mouse over the HiLighter toolbar and select an annotation feature

Feature	How to use	When done
Arrow changes the mouse pointer to a rotating arrow	Move the mouse to point with an arrow Click the mouse to drop an arrow on screen	End with right mouse click
Spotlight produces an oval spot that moves with the mouse	Drag a frame with the mouse to define the size of spotlight Drag with right mouse button to adjust the size Move the mouse to move the spotlight on the screen	End with right mouse click
Zoom zooms in on a defined rectangle to fill the entire screen	Drag with the mouse to define the area to be zoomed into Drag again to zoom into a different part of the screen	End with right mouse click
Magnifier magnifies a defined rectangle area of the screen	Drag with the mouse to define the area to be magnified Drag again to move the magnified window on the screen Drag with the right mouse button to resize	To end, click with the right mouse button and select Exit
Cover produces a narrow solid color frame at the edges of the screen	Drag the colored edges or corners with the mouse to hide part of the screen	End from the same button on the HiLighter toolbar
Text allows you to write text on the screen	Drag with the mouse to define text area, then type text	End by clicking outside of the text area
Highlighter changes the mouse to a highlighter	Drag with the mouse to draw	Works only one time. To use again, choose the feature from the HiLighter toolbar.
Pen changes the mouse to a pen	Drag with the mouse to draw	Works only one time. To use again, choose the feature from the HiLighter toolbar.
Rectangle or Oval Outline allows you to draw an outlined rectangle or oval	Drag with the mouse to determine the size and place of the outline Drag with the right mouse button to resize the outline	Works only one time. To use again, choose the feature from the HiLighter toolbar.
Numbering places a number next to each annotation	Once on, automatically places a number next to each annotation placed on the screen after the numbering was turned on	End from the same button on the HiLighter toolbar

Erase annotations

• Choose Erase Selection from the toolbar, then drag a frame around the annotation graphic(s) you wish to remove
• To erase all annotations at once, choose Erase All from the toolbar
• Erased annotations cannot be recovered unless they were saved in a screen shot
• Unsaved annotations also disappear when the HiLighter program is closed

Save annotations in a screen shot

• Select to save the entire screen, the active window, or a defined area, using the Capture menu, and choose the location where to save
• Save as a bitmap (filename.bmp) or a screen shot gallery (filename.ssg) file
• View saved screen shots as thumbnails, or double-click to view in full size

Notes:

The toolbar

• stays on top of all other program windows
• drops down as you drag the mouse over it
• hides itself again when you move the mouse away

Your annotations = Graphic objects

• remain with the application to which they are attached
• disappear when the application is closed or when HiLighter is closed
• can be resized and moved (exception: transparent objects can not be resized)
• can be erased individually or all at once

Context menu

• opens up with a right mouse click on the object
• contains shortcuts to functions specific to that object
• closes with a left mouse click elsewhere on the screen
• is specific to each object (exception: transparent objects, such as the highlighter, don't have a context menu)
