New Ideas for Designing a Course that Incorporates Technology to Enhance Student Learning

Co-sponsored by Information Services and the Center for Teaching and Learning

Open to all faculty, including past TSI participants

Proposals due April 30, 2007

PURPOSE

We will offer our eighth annual Tempel Summer Institute, a program initiated in 2000 through a generous gift from Jean Tempel ’65, in late May and early June. This year’s institute will provide a pedagogical approach to the integration of new technologies into the curriculum. Each participant will receive a $1,500 award that may be accepted as a stipend or used to assist in development of course materials, such as hiring a student assistant. Any participant who does not have a current computer will receive a new computer or an upgrade.

PROGRAM

Institute participants will take part in a one-day pedagogy workshop on May 31 to learn about course design and assist in identifying course objectives. During the remainder of the program, faculty will learn about a variety of instructional technologies that can be used to enhance student learning. Most sessions will be hands-on, to allow you to get a better understanding of a technology. You will create materials for your course during project development time, with the assistance of faculty and staff, to put your knowledge into action.

Participants will also learn how to digitize and edit materials and use on-line tools available within ConnCourse for class use and class administration. ConnCourse will serve as the portal or link to the resources you develop during the workshop.

Faculty will also take part in group discussions and individual consultations. Faculty members and staff from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Information Services (IS) will provide the instruction for the Institute’s workshops.

Concepts covered will include:

  • Using digital writing tools in a course to increase collaboration:
    • blogs
    • wikis
  • Working with audio and video to address other learning styles:
    • podcasting
    • Wimba
    • Internet2
  • Using images to increase visual resources for your students:
    • digital maps
    • licensed image collections
  • Making the most of campus resources and facilities:
    • renovated classrooms
    • videoconferencing
    • research resources
    • digital curriculum center (DCC)
    • software library
  • Getting ideas from other faculty:
    • demos by colleagues
    • strategies from CTL faculty

SCHEDULE

May 31, 9 am - 3 pm                              Course Design Workshop

June 1 and June 4-8, 9 am - 4 pm            Course Development Workshops

RESPONSIBILITIES

Institute participants will attend the Course Design Workshop on May 31 and the Course Development Workshops June 1 and June 4-8. Participants are required to design a course enhanced by the use of instructional technology, to be taught during the 2007-2008 academic year. Participants are expected to share their experiences with the use of technology in their course with other faculty during an IS/CTL seminar, workshop, or open house.

Before the start of the Institute, you will need to have a working knowledge of ConnCourse, our integrated system for delivering password-protected, web-based course resources to students on-line. If you are not a user of ConnCourse, or would like a refresher, short workshops will be offered the week of May 14.

PROPOSALS

Faculty who wish to be considered for the Summer Institute should submit a one-page narrative describing a course which would benefit from the use of technology and how learning objectives in that course could be achieved or enhanced by the integration of technology. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee comprised of representatives of the offices of the Dean of Faculty, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Information Services.

Criteria for selection include:

• interest level of the faculty member as exhibited in the application

• potential impact this work might have on the course

• potential for this work to serve as a model for other courses

DEADLINE

Please email your proposal to Chris Penniman at cepen@conncoll.edu by April 30. Faculty will be notified one week after the deadline. Space is limited to ten participants.
