2001 - 2002
During the past two years, since the last Staff Council information "update," Staff Council members have been tasked by Senior Administrators and PPBC to perform staff surveys regarding staff opinions on budget planning priorities, campus social events, solicit revenue-generating/cost-saving suggestions, and diversification issues on campus.
In the Fall of 2001, Staff Council was charged with the mission to elect two staff representatives to serve on the College-wide Priorities, Planning, and Budget Committee (PPBC). One salaried and one hourly staff member now serve on this important committee. The Council is now working toward making at least one of these staff representatives a "voting" member.
In November 2001, Staff Council hosted a "Meet the New College President" social event and brief meeting to introduce the new PPBC representatives.
Beginning Spring 2002, a Staff Council subcommittee began the task of revising the Council's Mission Statement to more accurately reflect it's true mission and goals as well as to define each elected position and the duties to be performed by each position. The completed revision was distributed to all staff in October 2002.
In the Spring of 2002, a Staff Council subcommittee worked to solidify the Council's selection process. Instead of a loose volunteer process for staffing the Council, a detailed election process was enacted whereas each "group" represented (Physical Plant, Dining Services, Campus Safety, Middle Managers, Administrative Support Group, Senior Directors, PPBC staff reps, and Human Resources) elected their own representatives. Those representatives would serve on the Council for the period of time defined by each group. Beginning with the September 2002 Staff Council meeting, a fully elected group (plus grand-fathered original members) sat together for the first time.
Staff Council continues to investigate reports of communication gaps on campus. An updated communication reminding hourly and salaried employees of College voicemail access via PIN was distributed in the Fall of 2002. All in all, general communication flow of College information from supervisor to hourly employees has greatly improved since 1999.
In January 2003, the first "elected" Chair of Staff Council took over the "hot" seat!
1999 - 2000
60 + suggestions/comments/concerns received from staff since the establishment of the Staff Council. Suggestions boxes installed in five locations on campus (Harris Dining, Physical Plant, Print Shop, Fanning Hall, and Post Office) providing staff convenient locations in which to drop off suggestions/comments. Staff Survey, Fall 1999 - over 40% of staff responded. This response helped the Council focus on the needs of the staff. Based on the response the Council implemented the following:
Personal Identification Number (PIN) voicemail access for staff who do not have direct access to their own telephone.
Improved intra- and inter-office communication flow. The Council raised the awareness that not all staff received the "Source" or their mail on a regular basis.
Summer Camps - although not every camp gives CC staff a discount, this year was the first year that all camps offered through College departments and were listed in one internal location (the Source) along with a contact person.
Day Care issues - although it was noted from the survey results that there was not a great need for daycare on campus, the survey results data was used by a committee established to assess the campus needs for the TVCCA day care center proposal.
Improved Life and Long Term Disability insurance eligibility criteria - As a result of our round table discussions, some inequities were noted among the College benefits. Effective July 1, all full and part-time on-going employees who work a minimum of 1000 hours per calendar year will be eligible for enrollment in the life and long term disability insurance programs.
