Study Away Timeline
To help students better manage the study abroad application and acceptance process, here is a suggested timeline for traditional study abroad and SATA Programs. These dates are subject to change.
Sophomore Year (First Semester)
SEPTEMBER
• Begin researching approved study away programs. Start by going to the study away Web site.
• Read the Study Away Guide and Handbook (CamelWeb login required) – found on the College's homepage under Resources for Students.
OCTOBER
• Attend the sophomore study away info meeting to learn more about study away at CC.
• Although it is not required, it is highly advisable for students to declare a major. Remember that study away needs to be integrated into your academic coursework.
NOVEMBER
• NOVEMBER 16th – 20th: Pre-registration – Students should carefully choose courses that will help them prepare for their study away program, especially language courses. Students should also enroll in any pre-requisite courses and courses required for the major/minor that may not be offered when they return from their semester abroad.
FOR FALL 2010 SEMESTER
& ACADEMIC YEAR STUDY ABROAD APPLICANTS
DECEMBER
• Begin to complete the College's CC Study Away Application – this can be found in the ONIP office and on CamelWeb under Forms/Docs.
• Begin making appointments to meet with your academic adviser(s) in your major to complete the Academic Adviser Form. You will need to bring course descriptions of classes that you propose to take during your semester away. Be sure to meet with you Minor Advisor if you intend to count courses toward your minor.
• Ask 2 professors to complete the CC Faculty Recommendation Form. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that this form is completed and submitted to the ONIP office before the study away deadline.
• Make an appointment to meet with the Director of ONIP (sapar@conncoll.edu) if considering an unapproved program. Bring materials regarding the program’s admission requirements, courses, credits, housing, and student support services.
• Apply for/Renew Passport (if necessary). Applications and additional information can be found on http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
Sophomore Year (Second Semester)
JANUARY
• Schedule a meeting with ONIP Staff for any assistance on finalizing a first or second choice program or help with completing Fall Study Away Applications (Not Mandatory).
• FRIDAY, JANUARY 29th: Begin finalizing all CC Study Abroad application materials and begin submitting any completed sections of your CC application to the ONIP Office by this date.
FEBRUARY
• MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1st: Students should begin working on all program-specific on line application forms/write essays for all CC approved programs by this date. Students should also give their professors any program-specific Faculty Recommendations Forms by this date.
• FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12th: FINAL DAY to submit all CC Study Abroad Application Materials before 5 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2010. The Faculty Study Away Committee (FSAC) will not consider late or incomplete applications. Students will be notified via campus mail of the Committee’s decision to grant CC approval to participate on study away.
• Once approved by the Faculty Study Away Committee, see the Director of ONIP for the completion of the Undergraduate Program Approval Form (also called the Approval of Participation Form or the Authorization/Evaluation Form). Do this immediately upon receiving the ONIP notification of your study away approval.
• Immediately after approval: Request an official copy of your transcript from the Office of Records and Registration (105 Fanning Hall). The transcript can be sent directly to the programs you have been approved to apply to. Be sure to bring the address with you when completing transcript request form. Please note that it can take up to a week for your transcript to arrive by mail.
• Complete your application(s) for approved study away program(s). Application deadlines can be found on the program’s website – it is the responsibility of the student to know all deadlines. Since most study away programs have rolling admissions, do not wait until the last minute to apply to your study abroad program.
MARCH
• Research more about your study abroad country. Start reading online newspapers and magazines, and purchase a travel guide. Talk to other students who have studied abroad in the same country.
APRIL
• Make your deposit directly to your accepted program. The College will credit your account for the amount of the deposit. Your program will send you visa materials and information upon receiving your deposit.
• Purchase an International Student ID Card (ISIC Card) for $22 (Cash or Check) from the ONIP office. To learn about the benefits of this card, go to http://www.myisic.com/. Don't forget to activate your card!
• Attend a Mandatory Pre-departure Meeting – date to be announced via email.
MAY
• FRIDAY, MAY 14th: Complete and submit the Study Away Notification Form to the ONIP Office by this date. You will receive this form at the Pre-departure meeting (Date to be Announce via email).
• Begin researching country-specific student visa instructions and application requirements online. Follow all instructions sent by study away programs regarding applying for a student visa and promptly ask questions if you are confused about any part of the visa application process. Do not wait until the last minute to schedule visa application meetings with embassies or consulates.
• Purchase your flight. Check with your study away program for specific dates of group flights. Check out STA http://www.sta.com/ and Student Universe http://www.studentuniverse.com/ for special student deals if you have an ISIC Card.
FOR SPRING 2010 SEMESTER STUDY ABROAD APPLICANTS
APRIL/MAY

• Read the Study Away Guide and Handbook (CamelWeb login required) – found on the College's homepage under Resources for Students
• Meet with ONIP staff if you need assistance finding a study away program or have questions about the CC Study Away Application process.
• Make an appointment to meet with the Director of ONIP (sapar@conncoll.edu) if considering an unapproved program. Bring materials regarding the program’s admission requirements, courses, credits, housing, and student support services.
• Begin discussing your Spring study away intentions with your Academic Advisor(s).
Junior Year (First Semester)
