Language Study
Languages are strong here, and getting even stronger: In June 2009, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded us a $375,000 grant for a major new language initiative. Read the news release.
We focus on cultural and colloquial fluency along with the more traditional literature studies. Classes are small and enhanced with technology. You might analyze YouTube videos, Skype with partners overseas or tune in to an iPod loaded with music, poetry and cartoons. Live in Knowlton, our international house, or drop by for lunch at one of the language tables. (No English allowed!) Keep it going at an array of language events such as foreign film nights, French Scrabble and international meals with live music.
You can major in any of these:
We recently added Arabic — a great complement to classes offered by faculty specializing in Middle Eastern politics, religion and culture. We also offer beginning Hebrew as well as Greek, Latin and linguistics.
If you start in your first year, you can achieve advanced proficiency even in a language you’ve never studied before. Languages will help you internationalize any major, increase your opportunities for study or internships abroad and prepare you to flourish in a global society. Winning combinations from current students and recent grads include:
- Economics with French
- Art history with Italian
- Environmental studies with Russian
- History with German
- Neuroscience with Japanese studies
- International relations with Chinese
