- Determine your proposed project first and then locate the award that will support your project or study.
- Research will help you locate the award which offers the experience you want. The more concrete you can be about the kind of experience you want through a fellowship, scholarship, or grant, the easier your search for the right award will be.
- The Office of the Associate Deans as well as the Office of Career Enhancing Life Skills (CELS) has books, lists, and descriptions of individual fellowships and funding agencies to assist you in the preliminary stages of your research.
- Talk with the listed contact person, faculty adviser, academic dean, career services counselor or with someone who has received the fellowship.
- Use the Internet for award specifics.
- Make certain you meet all of the award's eligibility requirements.
- Have a thorough understanding of the award's philosophy and its specific usefulness to you.
- Begin your preparation early.
- Prepare and submit drafts well before deadlines.
- Submit a final application that reflects the strength of your candidacy.
