Anthropology

Study Away

Whenever possible, students are strongly encouraged to enrich their growing anthropological knowledge by participating in study abroad and intern programs, or to apply to one of the College's certificate programs or obtain a certificate from one of the interdisciplinary centers.

The department of Anthropology also enjoys a working and teaching relationship with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in nearby Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Professor of Ethnobotany Manuel Lizarralde is conducting SATA Peru 2007 , where he and a group of 10 students are exploring the country's indigenous people and ethnobotanical wealth in and around Cusco, Peru, during the Fall 2007 semester.

Depending on their particular interests, former and current students have completed semester-long academic programs in Ghana, Benin, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, South African, Nepal, Bali, Samoa, Mexico (including SATA Mexico), Peru, Ecuador, India, Mongolia, China, and Vietnam, and a course-related TRIP France, among others.

Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of summer fieldwork programs run by a variety of colleges and universities in the United States. A number of anthropology majors have also gone on to complete a year-long period of cross-cultural study after graduation sponsored by the Watson Foundation. (See the section on Scholarships & Fellowships).

Study Abroad and Study Away programs are available through the Office of National and International Programs
