| We visited many cultural sites of Professor Hu's
home province - Shanxi - with his kind assistance and arrangement.
In addition to the Taiyuan Jin Opera Troupe and the ancient city of
Pingyao, we spent an afternoon in the former residential compound
of the Qiao family, now a site of historic and cultural importance
made famous by Director Zhang Yimou in choosing it as the background
for his (1991) Raise the Red Lantern. The Qiaos were a trading
and banking family who succeeded in accumulating unrivaled wealth
in the mid-Qing Dynasty via six generations' hard work in building
up a powerful network for nationwide commerce. Previous Next |
