(New) Summer Palace, Beijing 3/16/04. Rachel Mandell '07 and Ly
Huong Dinh '06 enjoy some time paddling around on the manmade lake
called Kunming Hu, one of Beijing's few bodies of water. The old
Summer Palace was burned down by British and French troops in 1860
during the 2nd Opium War. Empress Dowager Cixi rebuilt it on an
adjacent site, using a reallocated Navy budget, in 1988.
