TRIP China 2004

Suzhou University

Suzhou University, Suzhou 3/22/04. Prof. Zhang explains the tone changes of a Suzhounese sentence. The tones and consonants of the Suzhou dialect, a member of the Wu variety of Chinese, are remarkably complex.   Prof. Zhang, however, did an exquisite job of introducing the very difficult requisite concepts to a group uninitiated in linguistics and still unfamiliar with Mandarin.   That night, we would use some of our new Suzhounese in the marketplace, to the shock and delight of locals!
