Isn’t the rooftop beautiful? The building of Todaiji, announced by Shomu in 743, began in 745. "Todaiji...is the manifestation of the symbiosis between architecture and authority, eash essential to the other and mutually sustaining," states William H. Coaldrake in "Architecture and Authority in Japan."
