German StudiesJohn S. King ScholarshipJohn S. King, Professor of German, was a beloved colleague and teacher of German at Connecticut College for many years. In honor of his memory his many friends and former students established an endowed fund to support students in their study of German and its culture and society through study abroad by providing travel scholarships for this purpose. This is a fitting tribute to John King, who in his years at the College encouraged countless students to immerse themselves in another language and culture. The scholarships are intended primarily to enable rising sophomore and junior German majors and minors to acquire an early stage in their studies the added fluency and ease with the language that comes with immersion in a native-speaking environment, building upon the solid foundation of German courses taught here. In exceptional case, however, rising seniors may receive an award (e.g. if the student for some reason has been unable to study abroad for a semester or year). Awards can be made only in conjunction with enrollment in a summer language/cultural program in a German-speaking country. To apply for the scholarship, please print out this page and fill out below. On the reverse of this form (or on an attached sheet), please explain in a personal statement why you are applying for this scholarship, where you will study during the summer, and how your study of German supports your academic career and plans for the future. Either submit the completed application to your German professor, or e-mail to gath@conncoll.edu, or drop it in Campus Mail addressed to: Geoffrey Atherton, Department of German Studies, Box 5347. ----------------------------- Name: Class: Campus address: Telephone: e-mail: Home address:
