German StudiesSummer Study Away ProgramsThe German Studies Department encourages all qualified students to study abroad and offers among the options a summer course (Sommerkurse) in Germany.
Types of ProgramsAlmost all German universities offer language and culture courses during the summer vacation, which begins in Germany around the middle of July and runs until mid October. Over 50 universities located all over Germany offer these courses. To go to the big city, choose Cologne, Munich or Hamburg. If politics or urban planning are appealing, go to Berlin. For study of the social, cultural or economic issues arising from Reunification, chose one of the eastern cities, such as Madgeburg, Jena or Rostock. Want a small city where you can walk all around and get to know well in a few weeks? Then consider Münster, Bamberg or Tübingen. For studying in a city redolent with history, there's Freiborg, Weimar, or Aachen. Looking for a summer course that also combines music or dance? Then Dresden, Bayreuth or Darmstadt are good choices. The quality of instruction is generally excellent and the body of students international. Don't fear winding up with a bunch of other English speakers; you'll be in a crowd from all over the world whose only common language is German. Former CC student Justin DiMatteo shares his experience in Kiel, and Jared shares his experience in Weimar. Each year the department provides a number of awards from the John S. King German Scholarship Fund to defray the costs of the airfare. Awards are typically between $500-600. The deadline for applications is March 15.
