Human Development

What is Human Development?

Human Development is the study of developmental consistency and change from conception through the life span.  Students in Human Development study developmental patterns and how each unique individual is impacted by the biological, social and cultural environment.

What is the mission of the Department?

The mission of the department is to provide an interdisciplinary perspective on human development by integrating theory, research and practice in diverse socio-cultural contexts.

What is the focus of the Human Development major?

The Human Development major offers the opportunity for in-depth study of development throughout the lifespan.  The department's major offers a community learning orientation, and most courses include the opportunity to observe or work with children, teen, families, and the elderly in a context that is meaningful for learning. Many students become involved in the work of our department's on-campus Children's Program and in numerous other programs, agencies, and organizations in the New London community

Through these opportunities, student gain a more in-depth understanding of developmental theory within the ecological model of the interactions between self, family, community, governmental policy, and larger societal constructs such as values and beliefs.

What is the focus of the Human Development minor?

The Human Development minor focuses on social policy and its effects on children and their families.  Students study issues of human rights and public policies as reflected in our contemporary legal, health care, and educational systems.

This minor helps students gain an understanding of policy work on local, national, and international levels and allows students to compare various models.
