sailor boy Are your children ages five and under?  If so, a trip to the Mystic Seaport Children’s Museum could be a reasonably priced day-trip.  Located on the grounds of this maritime museum, the small one-room museum is great fun for children ages 2 – 7.  The biggest draw is a fishing boat built right into the museum.  Children can dress in period costume as sailors and climb aboard the boat for some fishing, steering, song-singing, and swabbing the deck.  After they’ve caught the day’s catch, they can head to the 19th century kitchen and cook dinner for their mates.  The capacity for fantasy play is incredible at this setting.
While in the museum, older children can learn how to tie knots from the experts.  Younger children will enjoy the play corner that includes nautical theme puzzles, model boats and more.

After your visit to the museum, you can climb aboard a real 18th century vessel like the Charles W. Morgan.  Throughout the day, staff members sing sea-shanties and put on small performances that all family members will enjoy.  Other activities include horse-drawn carriage rides and visits to the Chandlery, the Shipsmith, and the Hoop shop, as well as the planetarium.
