Young
and old alike will enjoy a visit to this historic submarine. The USS Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear-powered
submarine and was launched in 1954.
Rich in history, her keel was laid in 1952 by President Harry S.
Truman and her commissioning was sponsored by Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Aboard
the submarine, visitors can see how the crew of the Nautilus spent their
time at sea. The galley, bunks, control rooms, and even restrooms
are all available for viewing. Each individual is given a
listening device that narrates your visit while you walk. (It even
tells
you what the crew ate, which, by the way, included ice cream!)
This visit
may not suit everyone, however – the close quarters and steep
stairways are something to consider before entering! |

The museum itself is full of interesting artifacts and displays. Children will probably like the WWII Fleet Boat Attack Center the best. This exhibit includes three working periscopes and authentic controls. They will love pretending to launch torpedoes while they flick controls and dial knobs. Other
attractions include mini-theaters showing submarine films and
interactive computer displays.
