Natural settings such as parks, playgrounds, and beaches have so much to offer young children.  They give children an incredible sense of freedom.  They are able to roam freely and speak without concern of disturbing others.  These settings also offer children an opportunity to learn more about the world around them.  They will learn about the plant and animal life that inhabits the different environments.

Children will also be able to collect nature’s treasures, such as acorns, leaves, sticks, rocks, and seashells.  Think about the walks you took as a child and all the wondrous things that you wanted to save forever.

Tips for Successful Trips to Parks and Playgrounds:

Natural settings often have dirt paths with many natural obstacles.  If your are traveling with smaller children, it may be wise to carry the child in a backpack rather than trying to navigate a stroller over large rocks and fallen trees.  Children with mobility issues may also have a problem navigating some of these natural areas.

Also, be sure to dress appropriately when visiting any natural setting where deer tick exposure is a problem.  Check yourself and your children for ticks as soon as you leave the setting.
