Union Railroad Station,
New London

Most children are curious about the ways in which we travel from one place to another.  A trip to Union Station will give your children an opportunity to see many different modes of transportation.  As you arrive, your children will see buses and taxicabs pulling up to the station.  Talk with them about different destinations and various reasons for traveling.  Highlight any reunions taking place – this will reassure children that people do return after a long separation.

The highlight of the visit to Union Station will be the arrival of the Amtrak trains.  Children love to hear the horn of the train, the clang of the bells warning oncoming traffic at the crossing, and the flashing of the lights that announces the arrival of the train.

After visiting the train station, walk over to the pier and see the ferries that are in dock.  Your children will be able to see the Block Island and Fisher Island ferries as well as the new jet ferry.  Explain that the ferries not only carry people, but also cars, trucks, and cargo.  They may even get to see a forklift in action!

Groton - New London Airport, Groton

You can expand your transportation lesson with a trip to the Groton-New London Airport.  Take the children into the terminal and show them around.  Watch and listen as the airplanes take off and land.  Once again, talk about the comings and goings taking place.  Have the children plan a pretend trip.  Discuss what they will need to bring, where they will buy their tickets and check their luggage.   airplane
