SATA India 2008

The sixth SATA India program will take place in the Fall of 2008, directed by Janet Gezari, Professor of English, and Edward Brodkin, Professor of History.

The program will be based in the South Indian city of Mysore, taking advantage of the generous cooperation of the faculty of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and the University of Mysore.

Mysore is a city of about 750,000 people and is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka (after Bangalore). It is the former capital of a Princely State, and is a beautiful city of palaces with a very pleasant climate. The city is far removed from any areas of internal strife, the English language is widely used and understood, and the entire area is very hospitable to women.

The program is structured to allow for total immersion in Indian studies. Students are housed in the International Guest House of the JSS College of Engineering and all of the academic courses have a purely Indian focus. Breakfast and lunch are catered in the Guest House and students receive a daily stipend for dinner in local restaurants. Students are able to use the excellent medical facilities provided by the University of Mysore. All classes are open to Indian students and Connecticut College students are free to audit other courses not part of the SATA program.

In addition to Professors Gezari and Brodkin, who lead the program, students can rely on the assistance of Professor C. Raju, Visiting Professor of JSS Center for Management Studies and Chief Executive Office of JSS Educational Foundation.   Professor Raju is also a former Foreign Student Dean at the University of Mysore.

As with all SATA programs, students pay the comprehensive fee to Connecticut College and the SATA program covers round-trip travel from New York, and tuition, as well as room and board in India. All group trips in India are also included.

A SATA India Information session will be held in Fall 2007. Interested Connecticut College students should contact Professor Ed Brodkin, Professor Janet Gezari or Shirley Parson, Director of National & International Programs.
