Instructions for the Astronomy 105 Team Presentations
Each team will have some 20 minutes to present their side of the question.
After the presentation, the audience and I will have 5 minutes to ask the team and
specific team members questions about the subject and material they just presented.
Teams can use overheads, PowerPoint, movie clips or video clips, live action or any
combination of techniques the team chooses to present their material. If you need help with the multi-media console in the front of the room, make sure that you get it before you need to give your presentation. The media console at the front has both
an iMac (with no floppy drive) and a PC. Internet access is available on either of these
machines. Presentation files can be transfered over the network to a dropbox on the platform of your choice.
After both teams have presented their work, the audience will write up specific
comments on the presentation and give each team a grade for their work. In
additon, each audience member will write a summary of what each team
has been said (15 minutes).
The audience comments and grades will be factored into each team member's presentation grade.
During the time that the audience is writing up their comments, team members will be
asked to rate the contribution of all the other members of their team. This helps me
know who worked and who didn't in getting the presentation prepared. You will also be
asked to "grade" yourself and your own contribution to the teams work. These comments
and grades will also be factored into the your final presentaion
grade.
Absences: You may not miss any of the classes on which you are giving a
presentation without a medical excuse or dean's note. If you do get sick on the day
when your team goes up, then you will be requires to write a longer paper than the
one you would normally turn in. In this case you will be required to turn in a 5 pages (minimum) paper that not only includes the paper you would turn in on your side of
the debate question, but then you must extend the paper and write about the the issues and points that are part of the opposing team's position, that is, you will write a paper
that will discuss both sides of the question.
If you skip your presentation and do not have a valid medical excuse, then you will recieve
a zero for your presentation grade.
