It is feared that in small towns in rural America there will be the greatest threat of the Y2K millennium bug. One person who fears that they will loose all of their money, their electricity, and all of their computerized records when the clocks change from 11.59 pm to 12.00 pm on December 31, 1999. Banks across America will be stocking up with four times the amount of cash they normally have on hand in order handle the demand for cash. It is feared that this action will cause a chain reaction across the country as people empty their accountants making banks fail, then the economy will fail, and then the Y2K Millennium Bug will have unleashed its fury on the world. This is what the new Millennium will bring.
There are countless number of documents from the US government that document an attempt to regulate business, banks, the air traffic control, insurance, IRS, the list goes on. What is frightening to people is that not only has it been proven that no one knows what will really happen when the clocks change to the year 2000; it is impossible to know what preparations have been taken. The graph below is from an article published by J.P. Morgan in 1997 that predicted what the expenditures on the Y2K millenium bug would be. In 1999, it is known for a fact now that the most prominent branch of the computer industry has become software programmers and Information Technology System experts that produce software and solutions to the Y2K problems. Another sign of the millennium might be the failing computer industry as all of the people who have been working on the Y2K problem will no longer have work. There is fear of the Y10K, but it seems unlikely that this will employ technology experts at the beginning of this next millennium.

Each line of information in all the computer systems in the world must be gone through and corrected. The lack of technology experts to go through every line of computer programs and change them to understand a four digit date as opposed to the two digit date has been the biggest issue facing businesses dealing with the Y2K. Today the largest two, or fastest two, computers that exist are in the Pentagon in the defense department of the United States of America, and in British Telecom controlling the telecommunications systems of England. It is difficult to conceive what computaiton capabilities these enormous systems have. One way to understand it is if every man, woman and child in the United States were to do 100 calculations on a calculator per second, they still cound not do what these super computers are capable of. Even these super computers can not be programmed to fix all of the Y2K compliant problems. From the beginning of the Y2K scare, there have been no issues of there being enough money to fix the problems, the issue has been were there enough people available to work on the problem and have it fixed by the time the millennium comes.

The problem of the Y2K millennium bug has dictated the computer industry since 1996 making it probobaly the most significant project in the world market and international business today. What this comes to mean is that people must take it seriously, and can not feel that they will not be affected by it. It has been proven that computer operated devices that are not Y2K compliant will malfunction. The affect that Y2K has had on the business and technological world has also become an issue to people as they contemplate and search for answers in life. The fact is that it is difficult to seperate the Church - representing religion - and business in America. Churches need money to take care of their facilities, to run their programs, and pay salaries to those that run the church. People who are religious or are always looking for answers, and the Y2K millennium bug has caused enormous questions and fears so there is now a market to comfort those who need comforting. Religious and non-religous persons alike are taking actions to prepare for this impending apocalypse.

We had planned to include two seperate links that would provide a list of businesses, companies, and banks that are Y2K compliant. Further, we were looking for a database that included information of countries that are Y2K working towards compliance. In both cases no such list existed because there is no regulation that forces Y2K compliance and further no way for people to report on their acheievement of compliance. What is important to relaize is that the governmetns of the world have neglected this problem and have allowed the Y2K bug to rely on free enterprise and business to fix the problem. It seems logical that there wouild be an easily accessible list of everything that is Y2K compliant. This protects consumers from buying things that will not work after a couple of months. Further, it would make sense for businesses to use the Y2K as a gimmick for selling their goods. There is a demand for Y2K compliance in both the practical and more abstract, or personal, sense. There should be steps taken to regulate business and technology in order to avoid the collapse of all things that are not Y2K compliant.
