The New Age Movement is the most extensive eschatological movement in the western world today. Other names for the New Age Movement include the Human Potential Movement, the Third Force, Cosmic Consciousness, and Cosmic Humanism, but most followers consider themselves "New Agers". Followers of the New Age believe the millennium will usher in a new age, which has been called the Age of Aquarius. The Age of Aquarius is characterized by knowledge, the unity of spirituality and intellect, and a "new clairvoyance". A popular concept in the 1960's with a song titled, "Age of Aquarius", the movement was probably conceived earlier. The whole belief system stems from astrology and the evolutionary signs of the zodiac. It is an Eastern-influenced ideology that preaches "universal tolerance" and "moral relativism". New Agers believe that the new millennium will move us into the zodiacal sign of aquarius, which is considered better than the preceding sign. Each sign of the zodiac is more developed and brings forth more enlightenment than the previous.

The Age of Aquarius will come, according to believers, with the new millennium, but the movement also believes that the age must be preceded by disastrous events. Many have said that those events have already been taking place. Examples of some tradegies that many new agers believe have to do with the beginning of a new era is the 1985 earthquakes of Mexico and Colombia, the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl, and the stock market crash of 1987. Others that can be included are the Waco fire of 1994, and the Oklahoma City bombing of 1985. Believers say that the world must get worse before it can get better. These tragic events are what new age believers are calling the signs of the new age.
The New Age is considered to be a more feminine stage that is filled with understanding, sensitivity, spirituality, and "one-worldism". Believers are looking foward to these characteristics to replace the masculine and individualistic times of the present. New Agers believe that things such as the holistic health movement, parapsychology, and motivational seminars (which are all conduits for New Age ideas) have become so popular because people are beginning to realize the dawning of a new time and are trying to make changes in their lives. Other beliefs include: God is not personal, life is cyclical, the universe is eternal. And they practice vegetarianism, pacifism, and eastern mediatation.
It is diffficult to actually pinpint the exact theology behind the New Age Movement because it is an assortment of different beliefs and ideologies. However, there is a common thread among all New Agers, and that is of universal tolerance, peace, and harmony. There are also constants among all followers according to Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM). Two basic ideas held by all New Agers is the belief in Evolutionary Godhood and Global Unity.
Evolutionary Godhood is the idea that the next step in the evolution of humans will be spiritual, not physical. New Agers believe that people will one day be able to travel with their souls and not their physical bodies. When this occurs, humans will see themselves as god, or the "Christ principle". No more will humans believe that God or a god is divine, but they will believe that man/woman is also central and divine. God no longer will be the sole creator of mankind, but humans will also be co-creator and take credit for life on earth.
Global Unity consists
of three different segments: man with man, man with nature, and
man with God. The first division, man with man, says that humans
will teach each other love, understanding, knowledge, and acceptance.
With this unity, there will be great economic harmony. A world
leader with New Age principles will lead the world to economic
security and no one will be extremely rich or extremely poor.
The second segement, man with nature, says that nature is part
of God and since humans are equal to God, then humans must be
equal to nature. New Agers believe that they must respect nature
and the earth (Gaia in New Age) and nurture a relationship with
them. Global Unity is not only amongst the humans that live on
this planet, but must also be between all humans and nature. Man
with God is the third and final division and has been mentioned
briefly above. Man and God should be considered equal and they
must also foster a relationship of love and respect. This idea
of Global Unity can only be achieved if man, nature, and God are
all able to exist peacefully together on this earth.
In October of 1984, New Age followers got together and created, Articles of Belief, which is a brief outline of topics the New Age Movement feels is central to the belief and spirituality of the ideology.
