The Karaoke Phenomenon

The karaoke phenomenon is a good illustration of how Nikkei Brazilians assert their Brazilian identities. When they are in Brazil, Nikkei Brazilians occasionally go to karaoke bars, and when they do go, they sing songs in Japanese. Since most do not know the Japanese language, to say nothing of its complex writing system, the lyrics are in roman characters. Interestingly, however, when these same people arrive in Japan, they typically go to karaoke bars more frequently, and instead of singing Japanese songs, they switch completely to Brazilian songs. Nikkei Brazilians assert their Brazilian identities on different daily actions. Something as simple as a singing a karaoke tune in Portuguese is a good example of how Nikkei Brazilian search for their identities, sometimes even unconciously.
