Getting the job
Most Brazilian workers find their jobs through contractors or brokers.
Getting a
job through a broker has itsadvantages and disadvantages.
Since the workers often cannot speak Japanese, brokers speak for their clients,
but because they are hired through brokers, often under short term contracts,
workers do not receive the same benefits that regular workers do, like medical
coverage for injuries. Nonetheless, without the services of brokers some
Nikkei-Brazilians would not be in Japan. Factory workers often borrow
money from brokers, who recruit in Brazil, to pay for their plane tickets
to Japan. At the end of their stay, Brazilians often give their jobs to
other Brazilians. For this reason they try to establish a reputation in
the factories as hard and responsible workers, though the stereotype in
Japan has been the opposite. As mentioned in the discussion on the Ogihara
factory, tensions exist between Japanese and Nikkei-Brazilians in
the work place.
