The Igreja Evangélica Assembleia de
Deus was started in 1996. The congregation is comprised of
mainly upper middle class Nikkei-Brazilians, but it includes
a higher percentage of non-Nikkei Brazilians than the
other churches. Even its pastor is a non-Nikkei Brazilian.
There were no Peruvians in attendance, so that a man from India,
Ravi, was the only non-Brazilian in the congregation. Its fifty
members gather every Saturday and Sunday night for worship services
and every Wednesday night for prayer meetings, much like the
Associação
Evangélica Pentecostal de Nishi-Koizumi church.
The church serves a spiritual function by providing services
in Portuguese and a material function by helping the Nikkei-Brazilians
find jobs. Unlike the Associação Evangélica
Pentecostal de Nishi-Koizumi church, however, this responsibility
is not left to the pastor at all. Instead the church has set
up a committee that deals with these concerns.
