Megumi Baptist Temple

The service I attended was typical of most

conservative Baptist churches. Only hymns

are sung, and the instruments used in this

church were violins, flutes, and a piano. I felt

the most comfortable in this church, not only

because it is similar to my home church, but

because the service catered to everyone in that

English, Japanese, and Portuguese were all spoken throughout. When the congregation sang a hymn, the first verse was sung in English, the second in Japanese, the third in Portuguese, and the last in the language of each individual's preference.

When I sat down to listen to the sermon, a visiting Japanese pastor preached in Japanese, and a woman stood next to him and translated into Portuguese. At the same time, in a back room, a man was translating the sermon into English, which one could hear by requesting a headset. I was told that this type of sermon is fairly typical, although the American pastor would usually preach in English, while someone beside him would translate into Japanese, and someone else in the back room would translate into Portuguese.
