Welcome! We are happy that your interests have led you to the Education Department's “For Students” webpage where we provide links to give you a sense of our offerings. In addition to reading this page and others, we encourage you to get in touch with us directly to express your interest in Education and to ask any questions you may have.
You can read about all our courses on our Education Course Offerings web page and in the College's Course Catalog. Learn more about when the courses are being offered by consulting the College’s class schedules.
The Education Department offers a range of courses each semester. Every fall and spring, we offer at least one section of our "gateway" course, EDU223: Foundations of Education. This course is open to first- and second-year students campus-wide and is the starting point for anyone interested in potentially pursuing elementary and/or secondary and/or music teacher certification at Connecticut College.
In addition to EDU223, we offer a range of other courses. Students pursuing teacher certification may—by necessity—receive enrollment priority in some courses; however, enrollment in many courses may also be available to other students.
The Education Department certifies future elementary, secondary and music teachers. Read about each certification program in the Teacher Certification section. All certification programs culminate with student teaching, a wonderful, intellectually stimulating, final semester spent working full-time in a local K-12 school. This is a time when students really do “put the liberal arts into action.” For those who are interested, we also offer student teaching as a Ninth Semester.
If you think you might like to pursue certification, make sure to read about the certification program that most interests you, as well as our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. If you know you might be interested in applying to the program, this is something you should do sooner rather than later!
Please know that many of our certification students study away and engage in all kinds of extracurricular activity. We work with our students to make sure they can participate in the Teacher Certification Program while also taking advantage of all that Connecticut College has to offer.
Materials that you will need to apply to the program, meet program requirements, participate in student teaching, and maintain eligibility for certification (including materials detailing which state-required tests you will need to take and pass) can be found in the Forms and Resources section of our website. You will also find additional teaching-related resources there.
We look forward to seeing you in courses and working to support you in reaching your goals, potentially as certified K-12 educators!
