In addition to a brief oral examination/interview during Orientation, you should take the Italian placement test available at http://www.lang.ox.ac.uk/tests/tst_placement_italian.html
After you have finished with the test online, please write down your score and e-mail it to Prof. Robert Proctor (firstname.lastname@example.org). The score of this test, together with the score of the oral examination, will give you an idea of the course that is best for you.
This test is only for students who already know some Italian and are not sure in which class to enroll.
Students who have never studied the language before should enroll in ITL 101. Students who are native speakers of Italian are advised to enroll in 300 and 400 level courses conducted in Italian. Their Italian professor will help them tailor their reading list according to their interests and needs.
If you take the test, you will be able to determine what course you should enroll in. Obviously, when you take the exam, you should not consult Italian grammar books and notes. Otherwise, you run the risk of scoring too high a score and enrolling in a class that is too challenging and intimidating.
This table will help you choose your appropriate course.
|0-12||Beginning Italian 101|
|13-24||Lower Intermediate Italian 201|
|25-36||Intermediate Italian 202, 250 and 260|
|37 and beyond||Advanced/Upper level 300 and 400 level courses conducted in Italian|
