Fall star gazing at the Olin Observatory Sat., Nov. 9
Date: Saturday, November 9, 2012 from 7:30-10 p.m.
Location: Olin Science Center and Olin Observatory on the Connecticut College campus
This event is free and open to the public. We will be open no matter if the skies are cloudy, raining or clear.
Come view the Moon, the Andromeda galaxy, and more through our telescopes, weather permitting. Besides telescopic observing we will be demonstrating some astronomy software, doing star and constellation identification, and there will be hands-on astronomy activities for the kids. Many of the activities at this event satisfy astronomy badge and belt loop requirements for Boy Scouts and Webelos respectively.
We also have three very interesting speakers presenting:
- Mr. Bruce Levine, Mystic Seaport Treworgy Planetarium lecturer and TAAS member. "Learning About the Phases of the Moon," an interactive program for the kids on moon phases. 7:30 and 8:20 p.m.
- Dr. Mike Ostrander, TAAS and Arunah Hill Natural Science Center member. "Meteorites: Their Place in Astronomy and History," an overview of meteorite types and their relevance for planet formation, meteorite impacts on earth and a few historical items of interest. Included will be a display of space rocks! 7:30 and 9:10 p.m.
- Dr. Carl Tjerandsen, TAAS member. "Naming the Night Sky," a look at how humans have given names to the stars and constellations, reflecting the mythological, religious, agricultural and scientific lessons and requirements of their times. 8:20 and 9:10 p.m.
