John Anthony was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with majors in organ and French and received the Ph.D. degree from Yale University in Music History. He taught at Bates College and at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.

In 1971, he came to Connecticut College, where he is currently a professor of music and the college organist. He has served as chair of the music department.

He has played recitals throughout New England and in Europe. Anthony is a member and past dean of the New London County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is currently AGO district convener for Connecticut and Rhode Island. He is organist and choirmaster at St. John's Episcopal church in Niantic, Connecticut.

Professor Anthony's courses include: Concerts in the Community (115E), Introduction to Music (131), Basic Keyboard Skills (113D), Seminar in Music History, and History of Western Music (248).
