W. John Coats Jr., professor of government at Connecticut College, was the recipient of the College's 2003 Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash Faculty Research Award for excellence in academic research. He delivered a talk: "The Liberal Arts Academy: A Minority Report." Professor Coats is the author of The Activity of Politics (1989), A Theory of Republican Character (1994), Statesmanship (1995), Oakeshott and His Contemporaries (2000), Political Theory and Practice (2003), Montaigne's Essais (2004) and Armed Force and Moderate Political Life (2008).
