W. John Coats Jr., professor of government at Connecticut College, was the recipient of the College's 2003 Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash Faculty Research Award for excellence in academic research. He delivered a talk: "The Liberal Arts Academy: A Minority Report."

Professor Coats is the author of The Activity of Politics (1989), A Theory of Republican Character (1994), Statesmanship (1995), Oakeshott and His Contemporaries (2000), Political Theory and Practice (2003), Montaigne's Essais (2004) and Armed Force and Moderate Political Life (2008).

He has received research grants from the Earhart Foundation, NEH, the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Institute for Educational Affairs.
