W. John Coats Jr., professor of government at Connecticut College, was the recipient of the college's 2003 Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash Faculty Research Award for excellence in academic research. Read the news release.

Professor Coats is the author of The Activity of Politics, A Theory of Republican Character, Statesmanship and Oakeshott and His Contemporaries, published by Associated University Presses, Professor Coat's latest book is Political Theory and Practice (2003). Another, Montaigne's Essais, is forthcoming in 2004.

He is currently working on a book about the characteristics of, and conditions for, politics, including its relationship to the armed forces.

He has received research grants from the Earhart Foundation, NEH, the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Institute for Educational Affairs.
