"Because we speak to you, you can become conscious of yourself. Because we speak to you, your self-awareness increases. You are now aware of your presence. You know that it’s your time that you are spending here. You are the topic. You tie the knot. You are the center." - Peter Handke

"The art of looking is not entirely innocent." - David Lauer

Tim Golebiewski holds an M.A. in Production/Design from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was able to pursue a varied course of study, engaging in projects as a designer, performer and director.  He carried this multi-disciplinary approach to theater into his professional career.

Golebiewski worked as a New York-based freelance designer for ten years designing scenery, props and scenic art for roughly one hundred plays.  His work has taken him to various theaters in New York and across the country, including TADA (NYC), The Westside Theater (NYC), The Workshop Theater (NYC), Self Family Arts Center (South Carolina),  Granbury Opera House (Texas), Pennsylvania Shakespeare, and Sesame Workshop.

He has served as resident scenic designer for Smithtown Performing Arts Center in Smithtown, Long Island, and as assistant to and scenic charge for Emmy award-winning designer Bob Phillips.  During this time, he visited Connecticut College as a guest designer for several shows.

He has also directed numerous productions.  Favorite credits include Sophocles’ Antigone, Hecuba, Love’s Labours Lost, A Lie of the Mind and Brighton Beach Memoirs.

Golebiewski is engaged by the question “What distinguishes live theater from other visual media?”  That is, how can live performance uniquely effect a spectator, and vice-versa — and how can theater co-opt the strengths of other media to create new art?
