Michael Reder directs the Center for Teaching & Learning. Among his areas of interest is effective teaching and learning, especially using writing and other active teaching techniques to enhance student (and faculty) learning, and the creation of faculty teaching and learning centers at small colleges.

Michael teaches courses in the Department of English, including "Seminar in the Teaching of Writing and Tutoring: Theory and Practice" (ENG 300), Seminar in Literature: Reading, Writing, and Identity (ENG 120G), and "England and the End of Empire: Recent English Fiction and Culture, 1980-1999 to the present" (ENG 100T & ENG 222).

He has taught literature, theory, and writing at Baylor University and junior-year writing in environmental science at UMass/Amherst. He has served on the faculty of the National Institute for New Faculty Developers (2005) and on the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Management Development Program (MDP) for academic administrators (2007).

Michael is the editor of Conversations with Salman Rushdie (Literary Conversations Series. University of Mississippi Press, 2000). In addition to chapters on Rushdie, he has co-authored articles on PowerPoint, using writing in the classroom, supporting early-career faculty, faculty development at small liberal arts colleges, and teaching and science reporting.  He serves on the editorial advisory boards for Essays in Teaching Excellence and  Thriving in Academe and Innovative Higher Education. He has presented his work and run workshops at a variety of national conferences, and consults regularly on issues related to faculty development and writing.

Michael is the Chair of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Small College Committee, and also serves on the organization’s governing Core Committee.  Michael has served on the Modern Language Association's Committee on Academic Freedom and Professional Rights and Responsibilities and on the executive committees of the MLA's South Asian Languages Literatures Discussion Group  and the South Asian Literary Association.  He has served two terms on the MLA's Delegate Assembly.
