Students with Disabilities

Q: What services are available on campus for students with disabilities?

A: Students with disabilities are not required to self-identify at all but may choose to do so at any time.  If there is a specific weakness in your application – a grade or test score, for example – that is related to a disability, then offering explanatory information might be helpful.

Q: Is the Office of Student Disability Services involved in the admission process?

A: Neither application materials nor any other information about an applicant is ever shared with Student Disability Services staff by the Office of Admissions.  However, applicants are invited to consult either by phone or in person with the Director of Student Disability Services at any time in order to become fully informed about what type of support is available on campus.  Please call in advance (x5240) to make an appointment.

Q: Should students with disabilities self-identify during the admissions process?

A: When students register with a disability, they meet with the Director of Student Disability Services to discuss appropriate accommodations.   Reasonable accommodations can be made for equal access to academic activities as well as residential life, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.  Learning strategy sessions can be scheduled with the Director on a limited basis to address time-management, self-advocacy and other skills necessary for successful functioning in college.  An assistive technology station equipped with Kurzweil reading and Dragon dictation software is available to authorized students in Shain Library.  Peer tutoring is available to all Conn students through the Writing Center.
