Outside Scholarships
Financial Aid Services occasionally receives information about private scholarships offered by outside private organizations. Usually, these scholarships are directed to upperclassmen. In an effort to get this information to you, we will list a brief explanation and web sites (if available). If there is no web site is available, information will be kept in the Financial Aid Office.
Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA)
The Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA) is pleased to announce the CAPFAA Scholarship for the 2008/09 academic year. This scholarship will be awarded to a total of 7 students for $1,000 each and is NOT renewable.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
All candidates:
- Must be enrolled in a Connecticut post-secondary institution as a full-time undergraduate student in a degree program OR in a program of at least 900 clock hours, 24 semester hours, or 36 quarter hours.
- The institution the student attends MUST BE a current institutional CAPFAA member.
- Must have completed a minimum of 1 term or semester of full time study or at least one-half of a clock hour or non-term based program.
- Must have a federal expected family contribution (EFC) of 5000 or less.
- Must have a minimum Cum.G.P.A. for undergraduates of 3.0 or its equivalent (determined by the Financial Aid office)
- Must have performed community service or volunteer activities in the past 12 months not related to educational credit.
- Must not be a prior CAPFAA scholarship winner.
- Must be eligible for federal financial aid.
In order to be considered, you must submit the 2008/09 CAPFAA Scholarship application, signed by your school’s financial aid officer; enclose all required attachments, including a copy of your academic transcript; and mail your application packet so that it is postmarked by April 1, 2008.
Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.

Healthcare Financial Management Association, HFMA
The Healthcare Financial Management Association, HFMA, is the nation's leading personal membership organization for over 34,000 professionals concerned with healthcare financial management. Members include employees of hospitals, long term care facilities, home care companies, government agencies, insurance companies, public accounting and consulting firms, educational institutions, HMOs and other organizations.
The Connecticut Chapter of HFMA awards scholarships annually to individuals who are furthering their formal education in healthcare as graduate or undergraduate students based upon the quality of the written response to a question about a current issue in health care.
AWARD RECIPIENTS RECEIVE:
- $2,000 CASH undergraduate award
- $2,000 CASH graduate award
- An HFMA CT Chapter membership for one year
- A ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION TO Healthcare Financial Management magazine

American Institute of Certified Public Accountant (AICPA)
AICPA is the national professional organization for Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in the US. The AICPA supports several scholarship programs for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in business and accounting.

Koster Insurance - 2008 Health Careers Scholarship Program
Now entering its seventh year, the Koster Insurance Health Careers Scholarship Program has provided 30 outstanding students with the financial assistance they need to pursue their health-related career. Open to higher education students entering their junior and senior year of Undergraduate study, the scholarship program continues to grow in both the number of scholarships offered each year and the amount of each scholarship.

The American Association of University Women - Connecticut Shoreline Branch
An eligible woman enrolled or planning to enroll full time or part time in an accredited college or university. To be eligible, an applicant must have completed at least 60 credits and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. She must also be a resident of one of the following Connecticut Shoreline towns: Branford, North Branford, Guilford, Madison, Killingworth, Clinton or Westbrook and cannot be a relative of an AAUW Shoreline member.
The award will be determined by the student’s financial need, academic performance and personal qualifications.

Vincent J. Maiocco Scholarship Fund, Inc.
This scholarship was founded to honor Vincent J. Maiocco, the first President of the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation (CSLF), upon his retirement. Mr. Maiocco today and throughout his career has been dedicated to encouraging and assisting promising students to pursue their education, and to providing access to postsecondary education through student educational financing programs.
THE RECIPIENT will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need, and must meet the following application guidelines:
1. Must be a United States citizen and a resident of the State of Connecticut since the time they
graduated from high school.
2. Must be an undergraduate student. Students must have successfully completed their first year of
a postsecondary education program at a four-year degree granting institution in the United States.
3. Students must have received a Stafford Loan guaranteed by the Connecticut Student Loan
Foundation.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD will be an award paid to the recipient’s lender. It will be applied to the outstanding principal balance of the existing Stafford Loan guaranteed by the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation. The amount of the award will be set by the Board of Directors of the Vincent J. Maiocco Scholarship Fund, Inc., based on funds available. In the event the recipient has subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loan(s) through CSLF, the reduction will be applied to the unsubsidized loan first. Any balance will then be applied toward subsidized loan(s).
APPLICATION for qualified individuals is as follows:
1. Complete Vincent J. Maiocco Scholarship Application and return no later than May 15th.
2. Submit most recent official academic transcript from college or university at
which student is in attendance.
3. Submit requested essay regarding school activities, financial need, etc.
4. Submit copy of most recent Financial Aid Award Letter.

Henry J. Munger and Mary Munger Scholarship
The Munger Scholarship Fund grants a number of scholarships each year to college students. The awards are limited to graduating high school seniors and college freshman. Grants are restricted to residents of the Towns of Guilford, Madison and Clinton, CT. Preference will be given to student who will attend colleges in Connecticut.
A complete application is required. Acceptance of applications closes at 9:00 a.m. on June 9, 2008.
Reasons for the filing date are that the Trustees wish to know the college students will attend and the other financial aid which the students have received prior to making the Munger Scholarship Awards.

AES Engineering
Purpose of Scholarships
AES Engineering is pleased to be able to continue offering scholarships to motivated students to help in the furthering of their education.
Scholarship Criteria
Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted.
Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.
How to Apply
Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of the two questions below:
1. What do you consider to be the single most important problem that is facing society today? Why?
2. Why are you a good candidate to receive this award?

There is no application packet for this award. Please do not include your resume at this time. Be sure to include your full name as well as the name of the school you are attending in 2007/8 and your plans for 2008/9.

The National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut - 2008 Academic Scholarship
The National Federation of the Blind (NFBC) is an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for all blind persons. In the furtherance of this goal, we have established our scholarship award program. Recipients of NFBC scholarships need not be members of the National Federation of the Blind. NFBC scholarships are judged on the basis of academic quality, service to the community and financial need.

Howard E. May Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $6000, is given in memory of Howard E. May, the founding president of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut.
Jonathan May Memorial Scholarship , in the amount of $5000, is given in memory of Jonathan May who was widely known for his dedication and his leadership, both in Connecticut and the nation.
Mary Main Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $4000, is given in memory of Mary Main, inspired leader and founder of the Stamford Chapter.
Funded by Friends of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut
Doris E. Higley Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $6000, is given in memory of her as a most generous benefactor.
C. Rodney Demarest Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $3000, is given in loving memory by widow, Ethel Demarest. Blind since the age of 18 he ran his own business for many years, read NFB-Newsline faithfully, was always well-informed and was admired by his many friends.
Eligibility: All applicants must be: (a) legally blind, (b) a Connecticut resident or attending school in Connecticut, and (c) must be enrolled in a full-time program.
Deadline — Completed applications must be submitted by September 15, 2008.
The scholarship committee will review all applications and notify winners during the second week of October. The scholarships will be presented at the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut State Convention in early November. ALL WINNERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE CONVENTION AS OUR GUESTS.
