AP & Transfer Credits

AP & Transfer Credits

Connecticut College

We will grant credit for advanced level work in secondary school in accordance with these policies:

Advanced Placement (AP)

AP exams are sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board. You may receive 4 credits for certain AP exam scores of 4 or 5 which may be applied toward your degree requirements.

AP credit or the equivalent may be used to fulfill General Education requirements, subject to the approval of the relevant academic department.

You may use up to eight semester hours of AP credit to repair credit deficiencies created by voluntary course withdrawals or failing grades. Alternatively, you may use AP credits to accelerate your degree - up to 16 semester hours of AP to graduate in seven semesters or 32 hours to graduate in six semesters. You may also use AP credits to cover a leave of absence or withdrawal from the College.

When taking AP exams, specify that you want the results sent to Connecticut College. Over the summer the Office of Records and Registration will apply the credits as appropriate. A copy of your transcript showing these credits will be in your campus mailbox when you arrive in August.

Additional advanced standing

Students who present scores of 5 or above on the Higher Level examinations of the International Baccalaureate or the results of certain foreign examinations (including the British A-levels, German Abitur, Swiss Maturity and others of similar merit) may, on a course-by-course basis, be awarded four credits (the equivalent of a regular course), which may be applied to their degree requirements. Individual academic departments have the discretion to decide if the course may count toward the major or minor and to determine the course equivalency.

Secondary school course work

If you have taken advanced college-level courses in secondary school, we will grant credit only for work that:

  • has been completed on a college campus,
  • has been completed in a class with matriculated college students, and
  • has not have been used to satisfy any secondary school graduation requirements.

Please forward an official transcript of any secondary school course work to the Office of Records and Registration. We will review your file to determine if the credits should be posted to the Connecticut College transcript.

We will not award credit for programs that do not satisfy our criteria, such as the University of Connecticut's Co-op Program, Kenyon College's SCA Program, Syracuse University's Project Advance or CLEP testing.

For questions about AP or secondary school course work, contact Frances Foley, Assistant Director of Records and Registration, at ffol@conncoll.edu or 860-439-2066.
