Abigail Van Slyck

Abigail Van Slyck, the director of Architectural Studies and a professor of art history, is an expert in 19th- and 20th-century American architecture. In her most recent book, A Manufactured Wilderness: Summer Camps and the Shaping of American Youth, 1890-1960 (University of Minnesota Press, 2006), Van Slyck examines camp buildings and explains how they reveal attitudes about gender roles, notions of health, and ideas about nature. She was recently quoted in an Associated Press article that was reported by more than 30 news outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post.
