Head Coach Tom Satran - 10th Season

Coach Satran

Tom Satran, Connecticut College class of 1994, enters his 10th season as head coach of the Connecticut College men’s basketball program. Satran, an assistant coach on Connecticut College's 1999 NCAA Division III Final Four team, returned to his alma mater after successful stints as an assistant coach at Brown University and New York University.

Satran's Camels continue to make significant progress toward their goal of returning to the NCAA Tournament. His teams have qualified for four of the last six NESCAC Tournaments and won 42 games over the past three seasons. In  2008, Connecticut College posted a 17-8 record, qualified for the NESCAC Tournament and defeated three teams that qualified for the NCAAs. In so doing, the Camels earned a tie for the seventh highest win total in program history.

This year, Satran was named as the New England Representatitve to the nominating committee of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for the NABC Division III All Star game

As an assistant at Connecticut College, Satran helped recruit and develop one of the most successful teams in recent Division III basketball history. In 1998, Connecticut College finished 22-4, earned their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance and subsequent advance to the NCAA Division III "Sweet Sixteen." In 1999, Connecticut College reached the NCAA Division III Final Four, posted an undefeated regular season record, earned a number one national ranking and a number one New England ranking.

At Brown, working for former Connecticut College and current UConn Assistant Coach Glen Miller, Satran assisted in the development of one of the nation's fastest growing Division I programs. At NYU, Satran participated in all aspects of one of the top programs in Division III and was specifically responsible for coordinating a national recruiting campaign, game preparation and individual player development.

Satran enjoyed an exceptional career as a student-athlete at Connecticut College. As a senior, he was team captain and set a school record for three pointers made in a season. He was also a highly decorated student, earning the Brown/Brooks Award, which is given annually to the outstanding senior scholar-athlete at Connecticut College, the Hanna Hafkesbrink Award for the outstanding student of the humanities, the James Baird Prize for excellence in critical writing and the Lyman Allyn Award in honor of the outstanding student of Art History. He graduated with a double major in English and Art History in May 1994 and earned a Masters of Teaching English from the college in May 1998.

Satran, 39, lives with his wife Esther P. Wood Satran ‘93 and their daughter Hannah in Pawcatuck, Connecticut. Hannah will be five years old in April 2012.

Assistant Coach - Matt Fava - Third Season

 

Matt Fava, Connecticut College class of 2009, enters his third season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at his alma mater. Fava is the program’s recruiting coordinator and head of strength and conditioning. He also assists with film editing, scouting, game and practice planning, and on court coaching.

As an undergraduate, Fava was a student-assistant coach and team manager for the Camels from 2007-2009. As a senior, Fava won the Andrew H. Chait ‘82 Award, which honors a member of the college community who has shown outstanding service and commitment to Connecticut College’s Department of Athletics.

Prior to joining the Camels’ coaching staff, Fava coached the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams at Windham Middle School (Windham, NH) in 2005, leading both teams to the state championship in their respective divisions. In 2006, Fava founded, administrated, and was the head coach of a boy’s AAU basketball program in his home state of New Hampshire, which he continued to develop through his senior year.

Fava has worked camps run by Adidas Phenom, Hoop Group Elite, and Hoop Mountain for the last four years, as well as several Ivy League Prospect Camps and developmental camps at Connecticut College, Georgetown University, and Duke University.

Fava graduated from Connecticut College in 2009 with a degree in English (BA) and a minor in Psychology. He also completed the Education Certification program at Connecticut College and student taught in the English Department at Fitch High School (Groton, CT).
