Jordan Yearsley Nets Game-Winner
With 32 Seconds to Play in Camel Comeback Win
Williamstown, Mass. --Freshman
Jordan Yearsley (Export, PA) scored with just 32 seconds to
play, lifting the Connecticut College Camels (4-8, 2-4) to
a 7-6 victory over Williams College (3-7, 2-4) in NESCAC men’s
lacrosse action Tuesday. Freshman Brad Luckhardt (Needham,
MA) contributed two assists in the victory as each of the
seven Camels goals were scored by a different player.
Topher Grossman
(Villanova, PA) made 16 stops in goal, continuing to keep
the Camels in the close contests with his dominating performances
between the pipes. Williams had leads of 4-3 and 5-4 in the
fourth quarter, but the Camels scored four of their seven
goals in the final frame to earn the victory.
“This was a big win for us in terms of our league record,”
Camel Head Coach Dave Campbell stated. “It wasn't the
prettiest of games by any means but the guys never quit. Any
time you have 11 different players show up in the scoring
column you know it was a good team effort and that's what
we had against the Ephs. The biggest reason for our success
all year has been the play of Topher Grossman in goal, he's
been nothing short of spectacular for us.”
The victory vaulted
the Camels into seventh place in the conference. With three
games to play, the Camels are contending for a spot in the
NESCAC post-season tournament. Connecticut College will visit
Colby College in a pivotal conference battle at 1:00 p.m.

7/28: Countdown
to Faceoff: 2004 Season Preview
The 2004 Connecticut
College Lacrosse season promises to bring plenty of action
and excitement for Camel fans. It's time to take an inside
look at this year's club as we countdown to faceoff.
Attack
Brad Luckhardt established himself as one of the top stick
handlers in the NESCAC as a rookie and will lead this group.
Luckhardt has tremendous speed and utilized his exceptional
field vision to lead the club with 24 assists in 2003. Freshman
Russ Chase has been impressive in the pre-season. Chase moves
well with and without the ball and that makes him dangerous
all over the field. He has also demonstrated a high energy
level that has impressed the coaching staff. Freshmen Jordan
Yearsley and Ryan Voccola should each make immediate contributions.
Junior James Frank adds experience to this group. Frank has
the ability to get to the goal and appeared in 14 games as
a sophomore.

Brad
Luckhardt is always looking for the open man
Midfield
Senior tri-captain Jess Williams will lead the offensive midfielders.
Williams has the speed to create separation and is a smart
player who makes good decisions on the field. Junior Dave
Schwartz is one of the strongest players on the team and should
be able to overpower opponents with his size. Schwartz has
a very hard shot (9-2-11 ’03) and is ready to take his
game to the next level in 2004. Senior Shane Kaiser will join
Williams and Schwartz on the first line and is ready to contribute
in his senior year after being plagued by injuries thus far
in his career.

Junior Andy Shopneck
netted five goals last season and will see plenty of action
for the Camels. Sophomore Brendan Rampi is a big athletic
midfielder who finished his rookie season with six goals and
eight points. Sophomore Joe Higgins has bulked up this off-season
and is a hard-nosed player with sound stick handling skills.
Freshman Robbie Logan has been impressive in the pre-season
and has all the tools to be a great player in the NESCAC.
Freshman Lane Carpenter is a shifty and athletic player who
will be pressing for time at midfield or attack this season.

Andy
Shopneck brings experience and field savvy to the midfield
position.
Senior tri-captain
Eric Hill will lead the defensive midfielders. Hill is a vocal
leader on and off the field who keys the transition game for
the Camels. Sophomores Mike Conti and Chas McLauglin made
immediate contributions as rookies and will play a pivotal
role as defensive midfielders. Tim Finkle, who also plays
on the Camels hockey team has demonstrated his toughness and
should be a key contributor as a long stick midfielder this
season. Freshman Tom Anderson is a versatile player who has
a good stick and who will see a lot of time at long stick
for the Camels.

Tri-captain
Eric Hill is a leader on and off the field.
Defense
Senior tri-captain Justin Korinis will anchor the defensive
corps. Korinis is a leader on the field who has good instincts
on the field. Dustin Manchester is an experienced on the ball
defender who will be moving from long stick midfield to the
close defense this season. Junior Ben Courchesne is a heady
player with the strength to take on larger opponents. Freshman
Dan Layfield has proved that he’s ready to make immediate
contributions to the defensive unit.
Goal
Junior Topher Grossman returns to handle the goaltending duties.
Grossman is coming off an excellent sophomore season in between
the pipes. In his first full season of goaltending, Grossman
finished with 199 saves and an 8.59 Goals Against Average.
Grossman tends to come up with the big save when his teammates
need him the most. He is also a very underrated passer, who
can get the ball up the field in a hurry. Junior Luke Boswell
has done a tremendous job in the pre-season and will back-up
Grossman in net.

Topher
Grossman is a Talented and Fearless Goaltender
Coaching/Intangibles
Head Coach Dave Campbell enters his first season with the
Camel program. Campbell has familiarity with the NESCAC as
a player and as a coach. Campbell was an All-American goaltender
at Middlebury College and returned to his alma-mater as an
assistant coach. The past two seasons, Campbell has served
as an assistant at Notre Dame. Joining Campbell on the Camel
staff is Malcolm Chase. Chase is a 2001 Graduate of Whittier
College and served as the assistant coach at Roanoke College
last season. The Camels will be tested early and often with
one of the toughest schedules in the nation. Connecticut College
will open the NESCAC schedule against #5 ranked Middlebury
College March 20. The Camels will also be challenged with
a schedule that has 10 of their 15 games on the road.
7/28: Connecticut
College Names Dave Campbell Men’s Lacrosse Coach
NEW LONDON, Conn. --Dave
Campbell, an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame
and native of Norwalk, CT has been named men’s lacrosse
coach and adjunct instructor of physical education at Connecticut
College.
A 2000 graduate
of Middlebury College, Campbell enjoyed tremendous success
with the Panther program as a player and later as an assistant
coach. Under the direction of Erin Quinn, Campbell garnered
national acclaim for his goaltending prowess and was a two-time
All-America selection in net. In his senior season, Campbell
captained a Middlebury squad that captured its first ever
NCAA Division III National Championship. In 2001, Campbell
returned to his alma-mater as an assistant coach, and helped
direct the Panthers to their second consecutive national crown.
As an assistant
at Notre Dame, Campbell has worked with coach Kevin Corrigan
to develop one of the top ten defenses in Division I lacrosse.
During Campbell’s two years at South Bend, the Irish
finished the 2002 and 2003 seasons as co-champions of the
Great Western Lacrosse League. Campbell helped coordinate
recruiting, worked with the goalies, and assisted in many
other phases of the successful program.
Campbell will assume
a position held by Fran Shields for the last 23 years, who
has brought a program forward from its infancy to one of the
most respected Division III programs in the nation. After
a year long nationwide search, Shields was tabbed as the Katherine
Wenk Christoffers ‘45 Director of Athletics and Chair
of Physical Education in May. With Shields at the helm, the
Camels went 170-138, qualifying for post-season play in 11
of the last 14 years. The Camels finished 8-6 in 2003, and
reached the NESCAC tournament. It was also a banner year for
recruiting as the Camel program landed 16 student-athletes,
bolstering the depth of the squad for 2004.
“I’m
very excited to hand over the reins of our program to a person
committed to the NESCAC philosophy with national championship
experience both as a player and as an assistant coach. He
comes supported by a strong network of successful people in
collegiate lacrosse, especially his mentors Erin Quinn of
Middlebury and Kevin Corrigan of Notre Dame,” Shields
stated. “Dave has been directly involved in the recent
success of these two programs as an assistant coach in all
phases of the game. At Middlebury, he gained valuable experience
recruiting student-athletes capable of succeeding in a highly
selective liberal arts setting. I am fully confident that
Dave Campbell brings all the tools to keep our program successful
in NESCAC and move it in a direction to bring us to the next
level.”
