4/17: Sit
Down With Sarah Morgan
by Emily Fagan '03
Always on the run,
Sarah Morgan hurries into the student center; she has 20 minutes
to spare before she is off to her next commitment, volunteering
at a local school. Morgan has been a three-season runner for
Connecticut College since arriving from her hometown of Concord,
New Hampshire, participating in cross-country, indoor and
outdoor track.
This spring is
Morgan's final season for the Camels. Morgan is running the
1500 meters, the 800 meters and the 4x800 meter relay. Two
of Morgan's goals for the spring season were to break 5 minutes
in the 1500-meter event and also to set a new personal record
in the 800, either as an open race or in the 4x800 meter relay.
Saturday, April 13, Morgan reached one of those goals at the
Wesleyan Invitational, qualifying for the NESCAC Championship
meet with her fastest time in the 800 (2.25.51). Morgan attributes
her greatest achievements to the 4x800 relay team and the
records they have set as a unit. This event is unquestionably
her favorite because it is the most team oriented.
It is the team
unity and camaraderie that Morgan will miss the most. Oddly,
she mentioned the van rides and team dinners in particular,
rather than specific races or practices. But Morgan does not
intend to hang up her running shoes after graduation. When
asked about her future running plans Sarah said that she would
like to be running "at least till my eighties."
She looks forward to participating in various road races and
would like to run a half-marathon. Although she is a little
weary about taking on a full marathon, she does not discount
the possibility. Coaching is another potential avenue of pursuit
in Sarah's future.
During her four
years as a Camel, Morgan has overcome many obstacles including
multiple injuries during her freshman and sophomore years.
Always focused on the team, Morgan feels more frustrated by
how close her squad has come to qualifying for nationals than
the setbacks of her injuries. She is proud of the team's potential
and is confident that they could make it "If everyone
runs their best on the same day."
As a whole, Morgan
feels that the track team is growing, improving and becoming
increasingly competitive. Personally, she feels that she has
come a long way from her freshman year with vast improvements
in her running and a greater understanding of her relationship
with the sport.
Morgan has a great
relationship with her coach, Ned Bishop, and was quick to
point out that the confidence and support she had from her
coach during the recruiting process was one of the decisive
factors that landed her on the Connecticut College campus.
"Ned knows
a lot, he sincerely cares about each member of the team, and
he is very supportive," Morgan stated.
Morgan's dedication
to running is obvious and she appreciates this passion for
the sport that she shares with her coach. Over the past four
years, her relationship with Bishop has become increasingly
positive. Bishop was quick to complement Morgan for her total
commitment to the team.
"Sarah finished
her cross country career as one of the top runners on the
team," Bishop stated. "Her progression matched the
improvements of the team to keep her place at the top of the
pack."
Bishop noted that
Morgan's 5K time has improved by more than two minutes over
her college career, a result of her training and dedication
to the sport. Bishop believes that Sarah's biggest change
is her increased confidence and learning to accept that her
good results are not just "flukes."
Morgan was looking
for a highly competitive liberal arts college that she could
run competitively at, and as a Division III school Connecticut
College fit the bill. She was encouraged to consider Connecticut
College by her high school track coach, an alumnus of the
school. After viewing the beautiful campus and sitting in
on what she referred to as "an amazing class," narrative
non-fiction literature with Blanche Boyd, Sarah was hooked.
Since then, Morgan
has taken Boyd's course, which she still regards as a highlight
of her college journey. Morgan has embraced the NESCAC philosophy
of demonstrating excellence in academics and athletics, maintaining
one of the highest GPA's on the team.
At the conclusion
of the 2002 cross country season, Morgan was honored for her
academic achievement by being named an Academic All-American.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association gives
the award to runners who have attained a minimum 3.50 grade
point average and have finished in the top 25% of the NCAA
Regional meet. Morgan was also named to the NESCAC All-Academic
squad. Morgan believes that being involved in athletics has
helped her academically.
"Athletics
force you to be organized, budget your time and make sleep
a priority; running in particular demands a lot of discipline,"
Morgan stated.
Running has made
connections for Morgan beyond the friendship of her teammates.
This is not surprising because the sport is such a big part
of her life. Morgan discovered that her potential employer
at a neuroscience lab in San Diego, CA, is a runner himself.
This common ground has allowed for lighter discussions rather
than just the rigid interview process.
Sarah Morgan and
the Connecticut College outdoor track team will host the Silfen
Invitational this Saturday morning. Field events get underway
at 10:00 a.m.
