2003 Season Preview: Camels Gear Up For Eight Home Games on
Silfen Field
With the 2003 Connecticut
College field hockey season rapidly approaching, the Camels
can rely on key principles to make the season a success. Attitude,
enthusiasm and experience will key the season for this athletic
group.
Attitude starts
with the coaching staff and must be accepted by all 20 players
on the team. In her third season at the helm, Debbie Lavigne
has a firm understanding of what it takes to compete in one
of the most challenging conferences in Division III sports.
The Camels have carried forward the positive end to the 2002
season that closed out with a 5-4 emotional overtime victory
over Middlebury College.
The Camels are
coming off a successful trip to Holland, pitting their talents
against some of the best field hockey players in the world.
The trip served as a great team builder for a group of women.
The Camels have fortified common goals with each other, the
willingness to work hard to improve as a team.
New coach Rebecca
Bruce brings NESCAC Championship experience and a winning
attitude to the Camels from her playing days at Colby College.
Not to be forgotten is the senior leadership of captain’s
o Emily Huffman and Ashley Coltin. This talented twosome has
led their peers on and off the field, promising results if
expectations are met.
The Camels will
have some fresh new faces in 2003 and they will key the offensive
side of the ball. Katie Williams and Sage Shanley will both
start and provide some offensive punch up front for the Camels.
Shanley will be playing in familiar territory after a fine
career for the Williams School that earned her Player of the
Year Honors from the New London Day. Senior Carrie Ozols will
join the two freshmen up front. Sophomore Caitlin Connolly
(3 goals in ’02) should also see plenty of action with
this group.
The Camels will
combine youth and experience on the midfield. NFHCA All-America
Emily Huffman (8 goals, 3 assist in ’02) will anchor
this group, playing the center midfield positions. Huffman
has asserted herself as one of the most explosive scorers
in the country and could re-write the record books before
the year is out. Liz Lingo, a versatile athlete from Rehoboth
Beach, Delaware joins Huffman on the midfield. Junior Katie
Roe will also see plenty of action along the midfield and
can be counted on as a reliable returnee.
With plenty of
experience and depth, defense should be strength for the Camels.
Senior co-captain Ashley Coltin will lead this group. Juniors
Stephanie Cole and Corey McAuliffe have been consistent defensive
players. Senior Bethany Lucas and junior Amy Phelan will also
see plenty of action.
The Camels will
use two goaltenders this season. Sophomores Ashley Kenerson
and Kate Reardon shared the net-minding duties in 2002. Reardon
finished with 83 saves and a 2.33 goals against average and
Kenerson was solid as well, making 57 stops with a 3.03 GAA.
With 70% of the
20 man roster returning, the Camels should be able to use
experience to their advantage this fall. Lavigne is enthusiastically
looking forward to the season.
“We are extremely
excited about the 2003 season," Lavigne stated. “With
fourteen returning players and six talented newcomers, this
team has come together both on and off the field in the pre-season
and we are looking forward to opening the regular season.”
The Camels play
eight home dates on scenic Silfen Field in New London. The
season commences with a home date against Smith College September
10.
