9/7: 2004 Season Preview
In 2003, the Connecticut College field hockey program built a strong foundation for the future. The Camels matured as a team and made a measurable four game improvement that included victories over some of the top teams in the region. With 14 players returning and five talented freshmen joining the squad, the Camels should be ready to carry their forward momentum to the next level in 2004. This fall, the team will be led into competition by senior tri-captains Corey McAuliffe, Amy Phelan, and Mary Scott. This talented senior trio has been working diligently since November to prepare their teammates for the challenges that lie ahead in the competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference. Here's a quick look at how the Camels stack up as they prepare for their season opener this Saturday morning on Silfen Field.
Forward
The Camel offense will improve with the development of a dedicated young group of athletes. Sophomore speedster Sage Shanley (Westerly, RI) is the leading returning scorer (3 goals, 3 assists) and will continue to use her quickness to get to the goal. Katie Williams (Selinsgrove , PA) is another talented second year player that will provide some offensive punch. Williams tallied five points (2 goals, 1 assist) in her rookie season and competed on the hurdles for the outdoor track and field team in the spring. Junior Caitlin Connolly (Manchester , MA) is another fleet footed forward (2 goals) who consistently plays with a positive attitude. Senior Hillary Rader (Hingham, MA) (1 goal, 2 assist) keyed the Camels early season surge with some clutch passing in the open field. Freshmen Alex Albright (Wilmington, DE) and Jill Mauer (Millbrook , NY) join the Camel forward line.

Caitlin Connolly '06 Weaves Through Defenders
Midfield Along the midfield, seniors Mary Scott (Millbrook , NY ) and Katie Roe (Bethesda , MD ) will be relied upon for their leadership and field savvy. Sophomore Liz Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, DE) (2 goals, 4 assists) was an immediate contributor and served up many of the team's penalty corners. Sophomore Liz Cryan (Pittsburgh, PA) returns with a year's experience and is ready to play. Freshman Linnea Camerota (Waterford, CT) is reunited with her Williams School teammate and line-mate Sage Shanley. Freshman Courtney Mayer (Hingham , MA) has impressed in the pre-season and may shift between defense and midfield play.

Katie Roe '04=Consistency on the Midfield
Defense One of the biggest improvements of the 2003 team was the defensive play. The Camel defensive unit played together and stymied the opposition on numerous occasions. Senior tri-captains Corey McAuliffe (Yarmouthport , MA) and Amy Phelan (Rumford , RI) along with Stephanie Cole (Edmond , OK) were key members of the Camel squad that logged five shutouts last season. Junior Erin Wing (Greene , ME) appeared in eight games off the bench and completed another successful season with the Camel ice hockey program. Alex Krotinger (South Natick, MA) is the newcomer in this group.

Tri-Captain Corey McAuliffe '05 Wins the Chase for a Loose Ball
Goal The Camels have reaped the benefit of rotating two capable stoppers, juniors Ashley Kenerson (Wenham, MA) and Kate Reardon (Newton, MA). In eight starts last season, Kenerson posted a 2.42 Goal's Against Average with 77 saves and two shutouts. Reardon posted a 2.18 GAA in six starts, making 39 saves and recording two shutouts.
Coaching/Intangibles
Deb Lavigne enters her fourth season as head coach of the program. Rebecca Bruce returns for her second season as assistant coach. The Camels open the season Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. against Middlebury College . Lavigne is extremely optimistic about the upcoming season.
“We are definitely looking forward to this year and being competitive in the NESCAC this fall,” Lavigne stated. “With a solid base returning and we five strong freshmen joining the team, we are looking forward to a winning season.”
