NEW LONDON , Conn. -- Connecticut College senior midfielder Christa Thoeresz of Portland , Oregon has been named to the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) All-Region team for the fourth consecutive year. One of the top talents to compete for the Camels in any sport, Thoeresz completed her career with 24 goals and 10 assists for a total of 58 points. A captain of the 2004 team, Thoeresz led her club to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Semifinal round for the second time in three years.
Thoeresz was a four-time selection to the NESCAC All-Conference squad, earning first team honors in all four years. Thoeresz has enjoyed an outstanding academic and athletic career at Connecticut College . She currently holds a 3.72 grade point average with dual concentrations in sociology based human relations and American Studies. Thoeresz has been named to the COSIDA Academic All-America District 1 Team the past two seasons and has been named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team on two occasions.
Thoeresz enjoyed her finest season in 2002, leading the Camels to a 10-5-1 record and earning New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Year Honors. As a freshman, Thoeresz netted six goals and tallied 14 total points to lead her squad. She was named the NESCAC Conference Freshman of the Year. Thoeresz was also the first freshman in program history to garner All-Conference accolades. Connecticut College Head Coach Ken Kline is proud of his senior’s accomplishments to the program on and off the field.
“We are extremely proud of Christa’s accomplishment on and off the field,” Kline stated. “Christa is one of the most prolific players to compete in our program and we will miss her contributions to the team.”

New London , Conn. -- Connecticut College freshman Claire Linden of Bethesda , Maryland has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Year. Her defensive prowess was showcased in two post-season starts against nationally ranked opponents, Amherst and Middlebury College . As a starter in both games, Linden and the entire Camel defense surrendered just one goal in 197 minutes of NESCAC playoff action. Head Coach Ken Kline was impressed with Linden ’s poise and skillful play throughout the season.

11/6 #12 Middlebury 1 Connecticut College 0 2OT
MIDDLEBURY, Vermont -- The Middlebury College Panthers (13-0-2) remained undefeated by pulling out a 1-0 double overtime win over Connecticut College (9-7) in a NESCAC semifinal contest in Middlebury, Vermont Saturday afternoon. Brittany Cronin put in the game-winner with just 2:47 remaining in the second overtime for the hosts. Senior Paige Diamond had 11 saves for the Camels in another stellar performance in goal. Els Van Woert had eight saves in the victory for Middlebury.
In the first half, Connecticut College out-shot the Panthers 7-5 and had some prime scoring opportunities. In the 17th minute of play, freshman Kate Ashforth delivered a corner that was perfectly placed on the foot of Christa Thoeresz for a one-timer that was headed for the center of the net before a defender saved the ball near the goal line. Thoeresz recovered the rebound and cleared the crossbar with a shot that sailed high. Later on at the 24 minute mark, Rachael Schefrin’s great crossing pass was cut off by Middlebury goalkeeper Els Van Woert to keep the Camels off the board. Schefrin’s header after a free kick missed the target with seven minutes left in the half and the teams remained scoreless at the half.
The Camels best scoring chance may have come in the 66th minute when Van Woert made a diving save on Caeli Rubens before Kate Ashforth’s shot went wide. The Panthers had a chance of their own with four minutes left, but Erin Oliver’s attempt was cleared from the area by the Camels.
Cat Dickinson orients herself with the playing surface just before kickoff. Dickinson and the Camel Defense yielded one goal in 197 minutes of NESCAC Playoff Soccer
Just one minute into overtime, Brittany Cronin ripped a shot to the top right corner of the net that was stopped by a diving save from Paige Diamond. The ball sat on the goal line for a moment before it was cleared as Diamond had fallen back into the goal.
The game-winner came with just 2:47 left in the second overtime as a ball in the area skipped off the head of a defender, before Cronin took a quick straight-on shot from 10 yards away that found the back of the net. The Camels out-shot the Panthers 20-to-18 in the game. Freshman Claire Linden and the entire defensive corps played tremendously against the undefeated Panthers. Three dozen members of the Connecticut College student body supported the team after leaving New London at 6:00 a.m. on a chartered bus.

2004 Season Preview
Entering his 20th season as the head coach of the Connecticut College women's soccer team, Ken Kline recognizes that patience has been a key ingredient in building the successful Camel women's soccer program. Two years ago, Kline's club opened the season 1-2 but he did not panic. The team went on to win five straight games and finished 10-5-1 . Last season, the Camels battled injuries to finish just two games below .500. Two seasons removed from a championship run, many of the key performers are still with the team. With the arrival of nine new freshmen and a talented transfer student, the Camels could be poised for another successful season.
Captaining this year's team are two veteran midfielders, Christa Thoeresz (Portland, OR) and Mary Bushnell (Old Saybrook, CT). Christa Thoeresz is a three-time All-NESCAC and NSCAA All-Region standout. In 2002, Thoeresz was voted NESCAC Player of the year, igniting the Camels with what will be remembered as one of the finest seasons for any individual in the history of the program. Thoeresz is extremely excited and anxious for a new season to begin.
I'm definitely excited, Thoeresz stated. We have some great new players and a lot of potential.

Mary Bushnell '05 Bushnell has certainly made a positive impact on the Camel athletic program in her own regard. In 2003-2004, Bushnell captained a Camel basketball team that reached its highest win total in six years. On the green or on the court, if a ball is loose, #22 is usually battling to gain possession. Bushnell echoes her classmate's excitement.
We're looking forward to starting a great season and getting out on the green, Bushnell stated.
Here's a brief positional look at the 2004 Camels.
Forward The return of junior Maggie Driscoll (Peabody, MA) is the most significant development at the forward position. Driscoll is a tireless worker who wears out the opposition with her open-field play. When the Camels need the timely score, Driscoll has answered the call. A trio of first year players joins Driscoll up front. Jackie Wade (Medfield, MA) has impressed the coaching staff with her speed and playing experience. Lucy Strong (Seattle, WA) is a tough, hard working player that is ready to take the field. Ryan McManus (Marblehead, MA) is another skilled first year player who will compete for minutes.
Midfield
The Camels have a plethora of talent at the midfield position. Thoeresz (20 goals, 10 assists, 50 points) leads this group. Bushnell will be asked to lead a younger group of players along the midfield and will see plenty of action. Sophomore Caeli Rubens (Wilmington , DE) had a solid rookie season and is capable of creating offense on her own. Junior Amy Volz (Hebron, CT) will compete for minutes and is a reliable veteran.
Freshman Analisse Rios (La Paz , Bolivia) has demonstrated open field speed and has plenty of playing experience. Claire Linden (Bethesda , MD) and Kate Ashforth (New Canaan , CT) have impressed the coaching staff and are ready to contribute. Lindsey Coit (South Portland, ME), an All-State performer, is a versatile performer who will play soccer and lacrosse. Rachael Schefrin (Boulder, CO) is an all-around performer who is fundamentally sound and ready for action. Bryanna Tokarz (East Bridgewater, MA) has blazing speed and is progressing in the pre-season.
Defense Junior Cat Dickinson (Billerica, MA) is playing her best soccer this fall and is sliding over to center back to anchor the defense. With two starting defenders departing, Kline has moved two veteran field players from midfield to defense. Juniors Nicci Doler (Portland, OR) and Margaret Bacon (Sutton, MA) are returning regulars who will step in and start on defense. Sophomore Erica Gagne (Cumberland, ME) saw plenty of action in her first year and figures to be in the mix. Rachel Eschle (Groton, MA) and Casey Thran (Dalton, PA) return ready to vie for playing time.
Cat Dickinson '06 Goal
The Camels have improved their situation in net from a year ago. Juniors Kate Simmons (Altamont, NY), a transfer from Gettysburg College , and senior Paige Diamond have plenty of big-game experience to keep the Camels in contention. In 18 starts last season, Simmons posted eight shutouts with a 0.71 GAA, earning her a spot on the Centennial Conference All-Conference team as an honorable mention. Diamond ignited the Camels on their championship run in 2002, yielding just 18 goals and posting a 1.08 GAA. Sophomore Lindsay Graff (Montpelier, VT) (11 starts, 1.64 GAA, 1 shutout) will add depth and experience after serving as the regular keeper for the majority of the 2003 season.
Kline is ready to put his young squad on the field and is making final preparations for the season opener against Middlebury Saturday.
Although we are a young team, we play like an experienced group, Kline stated. I'm pleasantly surprised by the play of our freshman.
