Summer Internship Blogs

CELS Summer Internship Blogs

During the summer of 2007, four Connecticut College students,  Alex, Claire, Eliza and Emily, kept blogs for the six weeks they were out there getting their feet wet in their post-junior year summer internships. All interns were required to keep a written journal. But these blogs give current and future Connecticut College students firsthand and frank narratives about what it's really like to be an intern! Visit each of the CELS Summer Internship Blogs.

Claire Dowd, English major, advertising intern at Interview Magazine, NYC
Claire is the 2007-08 co-editor-in-chief of the College's student newspaper The College Voice and has a weekly column in the Arts & Entertainment section. Boasting an encyclopedic knowledge of all things popular culture and rock 'n' roll, she hopes for a career in publishing to realize her lifelong dream of interviewing musicians, but she'd be content with doing layout and design. A blogger at livejournal for quite some time, Claire's a fan of celebrity gossip blogs. Read her blog.

Alex Krogh-Grabbe, philosophy major, intern at the Center for Ecological Technology in Northampton, MA
Pursuing a lifelong commitment to environmental issues, Alex interned at this environmental nonprofit agency that deals with energy efficiency, renewable energy, and waste management, providing services to all of Western Massachusetts. During the school year, Alex works at the Info Desk in Cro, sings in an a cappella group, has a show on the college radio station WCNI, and works at the student-run coffee shop, Coffee Grounds. In addition to his frenzied activities at the College, Alex has kept two blogs prior to this, one full of general environmental nuggets and the other chronicling his experience abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland during the Spring 2007 semester. Read his blog.

Eliza Cooper, psychology-based Human Relations major, intern in the Development department, National Braille Press, Boston, MA
Eliza's originally from California. An undeclared English minor, on campus she's been involved in Chamber Choir, Percussion Ensemble, the college radio station (WCNI), and is the Housefellow of Smith House in her senior year. She's not exactly sure what field of work she wants to go into, but thinks she'd like editing at a publishing company or magazine or to go into advertising or public relations. Read her blog.

Emily Ricketson, Behavioral Neuroscience major, minor in Hispanic Studies, intern with the Program on International Health and Human Rights, Harvard School of Public Health, Cambridge, MA
Emily is originally from Massachusetts, and just returned from a semester abroad in Brazil. She hopes to work in the international public health field in the future. Outside of academics, Emily enjoys running on the College's cross-country and track teams. Read her blog.
