First Year Seminar : Glow Once again I took my freshman seminar to Vieques. This time my family came as well. We had lots of fun and all lamented the fact that we weren't able to take pictures of us playing the fool in the bioluminescent bay. While in Vieques Laura broke her nose, Lexi cut her toe and I whacked my head, however we still ha d lots of fun.

Katherine Brandt and Jon Pisarski on UCT campus : Marc, Shari, Jon, Kristin, Grace and some camels : Allie, Hillary, Marissa, Erica and Marc at the Hoopenberg vineyards
Rachel Jylkka, Katherine Brandt, Ga Nesha Hamilton, Nathan Hinman, Jon Pisarski, Shari Schultz, Concetta Duncan, Marissa Velarde, Allie Smith, Zac Smith, Ercia Gagne, Kristin Hocevar, Hillary Turby and Grace Kendall all spent the semester with my family and I. Here is a brief summary of the trip and some pictures.
We had a 7 hour flight delay at JFK, which led to an overnight delay in Johannesburg - Barbara Kohn, chair of the board of trustees, took all of us to a swank restaurant for lunch - Zach withstood a severe case of food poisoning, after 7 days the doctor threatened to put him in hospital if he did improve within 12 hours. That did the trick and he got better. - Jon’s surfboard hit his head and he had some stitches.- Four of the students and I went to a poetry reading by Antje Krog some delinquents decided to take that opportunity to break our car’s window and steal my cell phone. - In an unguarded moment Allie called me “Dad”.
Trip
We went to Johannesburg where we visited the Apartheid museum, Soweto and the Hector Peterson memorial. Depressing, but an essential part of South Africa. - Drove to Swaziland, to a game reserve that has no man-eaters, so we could walk and cycle around safely. Went white water rafting in Swaziland. - Bus broke down. A new one had to come from Johannesburg – a 5 hour wait. - After Swaziland, our new bus took us to the wild animals of the Kruger Park, where Hillary stood on a huge thorn. The blood spurted out of her foot in a major arch, but fortunately there were no hyenas, lions, elephants or wild dogs around to enjoy her blood. However, we did see them all from the relative safety of our bus. Relative safety because as we leaving the Park we stopped to look at some zebras, wildebeest and impala, unfortunately the BMW behind us was being driven by an unlicensed teenager who crashed into our butt.

Geocaching over Muizenberg : The Connecticut College Sandboarding Club : Zebra's
Post-Trip
Thirteen of the 14 students and I climbed up Table Mountain. - Everyone went to see the South Africa/New Zealand cricket game, which was followed by a visit to a Pizza place for Zach’s 21st birthday. - May 31, workers day, the students went to a concert to see Snoop Dog and others. -Someone stole Grace’s iPod from her backpack, she confronted him, he gave it back and apologized. - The students and I have gone camel riding, hiking, caving, geocaching, sandboarding, wine tasting and to a ska concert at Kirstenbosch.
First Year Seminar : Glow
Stepping off of the airplane, feeling the warmth and humidity of the air and hearing the crashing of the waves are just a few things that come to mind when I think of Vieques.
My freshmen seminar, "Glow", taught by Barbara Zaccheo Kohn ’72 Professor of Chemistry Marc Zimmer went down to Vieques to study bioluminescence. For me, this was my first real traveling experience and I wanted to see everything this tiny island (20 miles long by 4 miles wide) had to offer.
Our main reason for going on this trip was to visit Mosquito Bay, one of the brightest bioluminescent bays left (due to lack of development), and see the glowing microscopic organisms, dinoflagellates. Kayaking out into the bay at night was amazing; every stroke you took would glow because the dinoflagellates were being disturbed and creating light. We were even able to swim in the bay and our bodies were engulfed by the bioluminescence.
We also went snorkeling in the day and also at night to view the fluorescent corals, which was such a thrilling experience. All through out the week we went to different places on the island. Many of them were beaches, but some of us ventured out to Isabel Segunda, the other town on the island (we stayed in Esperanza). The museum in Isabel Segunda holds the all of the island’s history of struggle with the United States Navy. The US used this beautiful island as a bombing range for 60 years until 2003, when the US left. We saw many empty bunkers and, unfortunately, two-thirds of the island is still restricted.
